Hey guys, i just got an AUIII XR wheel for our AU and was wondering where you guys got yours fitted and how much?
I've been quoted between $85 and $93 which is a f**k joke, because i'm supplying the wheel and it takes under 30 minutes to fit... Also if its going to cost $93 then i might as well buy the friggin tool and do it myself. Does anyone know where to buy the tool? Ta Glenn |

To remove the steering wheel in an EF-AU
1. remove the fuse cover and pull out the airbag fuse. 2. remove the two plugs which hold the airbag on (they are round plugs about the size of a 10c peice on the mid level at the sides of the wheel hub. 3. Remove the airbag bolts from under the plugs and take them out completely (8mm af from memory 4. Pull airbag from steering wheel carefully 5. Undo 2 electrical plugs from steering wheel hub. 6. Undo splined button head cap screw from steering wheel centre (these tools can be purchased from Repco or any tool store. 7. Using the palms - knock the steering wheel from hub by impacting it where the spokes meet the rim. This can be pretty tricky and sometimes seems impossible but it will come. Fitting is just the reverse Shane

I used a small woodworking chisel to tap around the edge of the screws.
After about half a turn I could use a small flat screwdriver between the stars to undo them. Then when I had the screws out, I used a Hack Saw to cut a groove in the top of Screws so I could use a normal Screw Driver to put them back. It's very Rough I know, but it worked. The next problem you will have is trying to get the Steering wheel of the Shaft. I made a Puller to do that, it's a lot of stuffing around but it worked OK. But in all honesty, it’s probably worth paying the Money. |

For some reason on the AU's you need a Special tool to undo the Screws.
I have No Idea where you would get one. |

Yeah I heard that most ford dealers do it for around $50

Assuming it's the same as an EL the bit you need is a Torx T-50
Can get it from Burson's. They only had a set when i was there for $50 so i went to my friendly local transmisson shop and borrowed his bit for free! Also when trying to remove the wheel leave the screw in a few turns so you dont hurt yourself when it comes off

You can buy individual Torx bits from Repco, much cheaper than buying a set.
You shouldn't need a steering wheel puller, although they do make it easier. Most of the time I just loosen but don't remove the bolt and tap with my hands on the side of the wheel with my knees behind it pulling it off. Disconnect the battery, don't remove the fuse or you will need to reset the Airbag system when you are finished.

Bunnings never had the t-50 torx bit when I wanted one, too big. Got one from repco for about $12

You will find a t 50 to get the Steering wheel off at Bunnings.
But good luck trying to find any thing that will undo the Air bag on an AU from Bunnings. |

ok...
the 2 bolts holding the steering wheel in are 5 point Torx style bits.. Ford has the tool and will generally allow you to use it to loosen them off. (i popped down to my local dealer and asked to borrow the tool) i simply undid the bolts a little (enough to undo them with my hands) and left them in for later. the centre bolt holding the steering wheel is as said above, the T50 Torx security bit (purchased at a good tool place) simply undo the bolt, take it right out, then thread it back in a few turns so prevent the steering wheel smacking yuou in the face when u pull it off. to pull the actual steering wheel off, hold both sides of the wheel and pull while rocking from side to side, takes a bit of force but is do-able the rest is done with conventional tools

I bought a set of 6 point torx bits from bunnings today (included a T50). I still need the 5 point torx screwdriver though Can you buy the 5 point one from a tool shop? |

It's a special Ford tool, I suspect it's to stop owners from playing with the Air Bag.
But like I said I got them loose any way. |

But like I said I got them loose any way. Yep you are right on that diff to the E series I have the special 5 sided torx & I side is offset to the others. It suits the BA as well I've been told. I had trouble trying to get this bit & when I finally did it cost $30. Within 10 min wheel was off & new 1 fitted. I was going to use a small chisel & hammer but worried I might damage something THE FORD P/N IS 301PR COST IS $30+GST=$33 (Air Bag Removel Tool) ghiaman |
