This would be interesting, doesn't the BA have them. Wouldn't you need some sorta light sensor on the dash and when it reaches a certain point the light trigger a relay and turn on. Or something like that.

I was in a BA Fairmont on the weekend and that had the automatic headlights...it was on the indicator stalk.
And after driving my brother in-law's VY (OH THE PAIN) thats got the automatic headlights too...the setting for this is the on the same sort of rotating switch for the EF / EL. Would anyone know if it would be as easy as getting one of the BA setups and installing it into my EF...obviously some mods would have to be made to the light switch. |

Somebody with some electronics expertise would be able to design a circuit that would do this.
There was a topic like this not long ago, the consensus was that while there used to be an aftermarket kit, it isn't made anymore. I daresay if somebody designed a system specific to the EF/L they could sell a few. You would need to use a light level sensor that at certain light levels would close a circuit to turn on the lights via a relay. Simple in theory.... |

I'm fairly certain that jaycar still sell the kit.... they did last time I was in there anyway.

I did successfully did it, and it worked well... Not like the B-series, but the same way the Commo's work. Lights come on when you unlock the car, when it gets dark, stay on when you lock the thing, and they faded away rather then just switching off...
Only problem was I blew up one of the circuits and ended up buying a BF, so I threw everything away. I was working on it to use the climate sunload sensor rather than having some ratty extra sensor hanging from the front window. I remember it had 2 timers in it, the logic was controlled by a select few wires in the car and a fun array of gate IC's, plus the light fader. All commercially available, and I was just using kits from d**k Smith or Jaycar. So it can be done! |

ARM79 did you make your own setup or use a kit?
Frankieh I may have to go check Jaycar out. I'm keen on the idea too, I'd also use an additional relay to cut headlight power unless the key is in the acc position. |

Made my own from a combination of kits, plus an extra board for the IC's.
I wasn't happy with just "on when it gets dark and your driving" style kits from Jaycar or Autobarn, etc. |

Do you have details on what components you used?
If I knew, I could get the components from DSE/Jaycar etc, and put together a kit.. What other features did your system have? |

Do you have a working understanding of electronics, wiring diagrams and logic gates/ICs?

Reasonable. If you show me a circuit diagram and list the components I should be able to build it. I'm a computer systems engineering student, so I have a fair idea.

I think you missed the bit where I said before I kinda blew it up and threw it all out, so I have nothing to show for it in the end.
I used d**k Smith timer circuits to turn the thing off and on, and hold it on where needed. Jaycar make a delay/fade circuit... And the logic to make it all work I made up as I went along. No diagrams or components, just made it up as I went along and changed and bought stuff where needed. Drawing and documenting is unfortunately not how I operate... I dive in and f**k with it until I get it done... lol... So most of my mods are mostly in my head or forgotten how I did them. |

Im up for this mod ^^. I would like to do it on my EF Gli which is now a GHIA Literally. Has anyone done it. The Kit from Jaycar or DS how much is it and how easy is it to do?

If any of you guys can list what is needed for this mod - I'd like to get this setup.
Thanks for all the responses too guys. |
