Hi,
I have electric front windows, with the rear windows as standard winders. Can anyone advise comments on converting to electric rear windows? Was it easy? Anything to look out for? Where to get the parts (ie names of wrecking yards in Melbourne)? ANy advice would be appreaciated!

You're up for 2 rear power window regulators, and 2 rear door looms from a BA futura+. You'll also need rear power window door trims. If you want everything factory, you'll want to replace your RHS and LHS body looms (big job), as they supply power to the rear door power windows. Choiceford in sunshine, and Diamond Auto Wreckers in Cambellfield should look after you for parts. |

Hey Thanks for the advice (especially the looms!) I will visit the wreckers you mention and see whats available. I am thinking the door trims will be hard to get, but lets see.
Cheers!

changing the body looms into really all that hard if you have a bit of common sense about you. i did rear electric windows in my ba recently, took me about 1.5 days roughly.
as mentioned you will need: left and right rear electric door regulators (au and ba are the same) new rear door trims to suit, maybe worth upgrading to fairmont or xr style all round left and right rear door looms from a ba with electric rear windows left and right internal body/floor looms from a ba with rear power windows 4 way master power window switch 2 x single power window switches 4 x screw hole lugs (the new trims will have screws in the armrests, so you will need two of these lugs for each door for the screws to screw into, just like on the front door. from memory i think they are about $3 or $4 each from coventry) method. strip out interior of car, including rear door trims, seats, centre console, any covers on the a b or c pillars, and all kick panels front to back. figure out which loom is left and right, (the sedan left loom has an extra plug that goes to the fuel pump under the back seat, in that big black circular thing. starting from the front corner on one side change the looms over, replacing each plug as you take the old one out to avoid confusion and losing you place. for some of the tricky spots (especially the plugs that go to the door looms on the front, and the rears can be a bit of a b**ch) i used a coat hanger bent out to a long piece of stiff wire. thread it through the holes, and loop it around the loom just under the plug and pull it through the hole bring the plug with it. takes a bit of jiggling but the best way i found. the drivers side loom will have a large bundle of wires that go to the transmission area and link to the left side of the car. basically the electric flow in the car goes from the drivers door, to the passenger door via dash wiring, and drivers door to drivers rear door straight through, and drivers door to left rear door through the big plug that links left and right sides together. once both looms installed, remove the manual regulators and door looms. there will be two black pieces of steel pop riveted to each door, which help to hold the manual door trims on. those rivets need to be drilled out and the black pieces of steel removed. once thats done, install your electric regulators, and new door looms. (i got a mobile mechanic to do both my regulators for $50 the day before as i was feeling slack.) once theyre in and the looms are connected up, plug in your drivers master switch and your rear single switches and try it out. (both the master switch, and the switch on your test door must be installed for it to work) if they work, put your car back together. if not go back over what youve done and try to locate any gremlins. feel free to pm me with any queries or issues you might have doing it. |
