To do the cluster its max 1hr job for the cluster and about 1 hr for the switches. As for a XR cluster , no you dont need to reprogram the k's to get it working but you have to make sure that the fuel table and other functions are setup correctly. If you get a cluster from say a ute then the fuel gauge will be way out etc

I have just changed the cluster in my BA Futura to an XR one and it was really very easy. Took 15 min with a screwdriver and no hassles. You will need your local Ford guys to set the Km and they can only do this if your new cluster has less than 100km on it. There are specialist instrument places than can reset one for you if it has done more.

If the new cluster has over 100 Km, I'm pretty sure it's just a matter of swapping over the EPROM chip into the new cluster in order to carry your K's over. Nothing a steady hand and soldering iron can't handle. |

Yeah kinda true, as long the features are the same on the new cluster. And unless you are familiar with SMD soldering it can be a challenge.

Soldering isn't the problem. It's the DEsoldering that gets me.

^ true.
I've hand repaired chips on computer boards, that's some damn fine soldering work. I wish for a hot air reflow setup.

Yeah a reflow workstation would be nice, but too damned expensive.

That CuriousInventor video you found awhile ago Matt was Mailbagged to Silicon Chip recently. I still find it incredibly useful.
http://www.curiousinventor.com/guides/S ... dering/101 That was where I first saw reference to low-temperature solder but have been unable to find it anywhere until I found this: http://www.chipquikinc.com/ Also, there was an article in Silicon Chip recently on making your own reflow-oven out of a toaster oven and a thermocouple on a digital multimeter. I can scan it in if there's any interest (assuming I can find it!) Luke Last edited by Lukeyson on Fri May 23, 2008 5:23 pm, edited 1 time in total. |

Dont worry about low temp solder, with the 8 Pin SOIC eeprom you dont need it. You can use normal solder.

But wouldn't it be interesting to be able to find a programmer for the Instrument Cluster 1608 microcontroller and be able to dismount it using this method.
Maybe getting shift alert in any cluster is just the start - if you got access to a dissasembler and could figure it out, maybe you could make the leds up the left and right side light up in sequence for a shift alert instead of that inaudible ding ding... Or make Police Mode accessible using the trip-meter stalk (Trip A, Trip B, Police Mode). I'm dreaming again aren't I..... Yeah would be nice to be able to dump the firmware from the Micro. Im sure by looking at similar Micro's that it wouldnt be too hard to do some changes, but the kit that would be needed to do it probably pushes it outside our hobbiest budgets.
As for me going to Adelaide. Im lucky if I make it out of Melbourne, so no sorry wont be going there anytime soon. You can still post them if you really want them done. Matt
