This is where I purchased mine. Not opus, but higher current rating, alot cheaper and all the features.

Im also building a carputer for my car, and I have the parts, except I was stuck on the power. With inverters you need Pure Sine wave inverters, and they cost lots. As for DC-DC they are only like 150W or so for a good one, and um.. I know they are more efficient and all, but my computer is struggling with a 350W atm. And I know once I unplug some stuff, it'll be less, but 150W wouldn't be enough... so is there a reason why they are of such small value?

Im also getting a touch screen, remote - lazy, I got a seperate LCD screen to mount somewhere closer so I don't have to look very far to see what's playing...(im lazy), so my only problem is power.

Cheers

after previous post i found this:
http://www.zantech.com.au/apowertech/PSU-12vdc250w.html
they quoted me $208 plus $15 postage plus GST.

Fair bit more expensive than the american ones, but it's got a little more grunt. Mind you, for a in car pc, 250 watts should be ample.
It's not like you need a p4 and a huge graphics card just to play mp3s and DVD's etc. and it fits straight into a ATX case..

Well, I do actually want to play games and stuff like that, and my computer for the car is an 3000+ AthlonXP, with 1gb of DDR ram, blah blah blah, and also a 9200SE which I thought would be enough for a car computer.. I WAS gonna get a 9800 but Ill just leave that in my home PC.

by the way, Im pretty sure WLAN only works while not in motion. IE I got Unwired, and it says only useable while in one spot, not while moving around.

But I guess when it's direct, it would be different cos you don't connect to different "Sub Sations"... that was just in regards to Waggin's remark on head to head games in a convoy.... would be awesome.

Cheers

I'm going to be using a 200W DC-DC PSU to comfortably power a P4 2.4Ghz, 512MB RAM, 1x DVD Drive, 1x 3.5" HDD and 5 USB devices. Lay off the big video cards, dont run multiple cdrom and hdd's and you'll be fine!

WLAN and WNET are 2 different things. Unwired do indeed claim that you need to be stopped in the 1 spot. I'm assuming seamless roaming isn't available. Each time you'd jump WiFi towers, you'd lose any established TCP connections. I wouldnt be surprised if you would join a different subnet also, which means time for DHCP to re-collect lease information for the new network, and once DHCP unbinds from a network card, all TCP and UDP based programs will say byebyes.

WLAN is not a problem, ie between a few cars travelling together. It doesnt matter whether your standing still, or doing 300km/hr. As long as you're within range, it will work.

The best option for true 'Wireless Internet' is GPRS. Vodafone have a $79/mo unlimited (err, 500mb AUP) plan. Speeds of between 64kbit/sec and 128kbit/sec are achievable apparently. Then you just need a USB GPRS modem for your PC and voila!

Or a bluetooth dongle and bluetooth mobile phone :) Ive managed to get GPRS internet working on my *ugggh* pentium 1 laptop over the *uggh* infrared port.

Connection speeds are good, much better then *uggh* dialup.

Trick is to dial *99# as the internet dialup number and hey presto!

well thats a point. If i was to want to use a USB GPRS modem, would I need a SIM card?

I have no experience with GPRS beyond sending MMS on my mobile and using a blackberry *drool*. I've surfed fordmods on a blackberry, quite nice indeed :D

Dunno about a GPRS modem. I imagine there has to be SOME method of identifying you, maybe just usernames and passwoids?

that'd be ok. GPRS is totally seperate from GSM, yah? And SIM cards are only needed for GSM ident... so yeh.

Hmm

*thinks*
