My friggin car wont lock or unlock properly at regular times now so Ive bit the bullet and purchased 4 new actuators.Can anyone tell me if its a prick of a job and roughly how long it shouold take to to all 4 doors.Any hints or tips also on replacing these as well.Also if anyones interested I can get sets of these actuators for $200+post geuine ford part # 96DA EL.My local ford dealer is asking $105ea.

its not a difficult job. I think from memory they may be riveted in but dont quote me on that. Pull the door trims off and have a look and u'll see how it all works

nah its a pretty easy job, i needed to buy some bolts to hold the actuators in though caus they were originally riveted in, i changed the locking mechanisim as well, all up took 3 or 4 hours

There are two ways to do it
First is the most common You have to punch out the centre of the rivet, then you can drill out the rest of it. (The centre part is rock hard and you can sit there all day drilling with no result) then you unhook it from the rod (you'll need to bend/open the hook part) Second way, and this is how ive done it. The actuators are bolted into a plate which is riveted to the door. You can unbolt them from the plate, you need a 5 or 6mm socket and just undo them from behind. Its a bit fiddly, but its alot safer than bashing and drilling it out. And overall it takes about the same amount of time since you dont have to find the correct rivets to put them back it. Not sure if this will work on the rears as Ive only done the fronts this way.

My rear left actuator is a bit slower than the other 3 lately. Is this the sign it is about to go kaput?

Pull it apart and regrease the insides of it, seemed to work with one of mine.

My advice is to get the rivets out any which way you can, and buy some 19" M6 cage nuts from Jaycar, and use M6 bolts with a washer to hold the plate in position. You need to file out the hole in the plate to make it square to put the nuts in. Makes it easy next time.
Better still, go to your local nuts/bolts/screws place and buy some M6 nutserts for the plate. That cheapskate Uncle Henry could have used nutserts originally........ Or a 4mm aluminium plate with threaded holes... Cheers, Dang. |
