Hey,
Im looking at changing my steering wheel to a billet one on my el fairmont, I can relocate the cruise control switches no problems, What I want to know is the legal issues with removing the airbag? Is it illegal to remove the airbag? And if so what are the consequences? Last of all what would be the best way to trick the computer that the airbag is still there? I was thinking of just putting a resister between the wires going to the airbag. ( ill just test the airbag first the find the value). I want to do this cause my steering wheel is stuffed and so if im going to replace it id rather get something that looks cool!

Yes, its highly illegal, if cops see it - look out.
Also dont count on having insurance as no company would touch you after that.. If you neglect to tell them, this is one of the things they would come down on you like a tonne of bricks full of lead topped off with 30 fat men!

Oh and don't go prodding the airbag with a multimeter, you're likely to accidentally deploy it. And unless I'm in an accident I don't want to be anywhere near one.
If you REALLY MUST get rid of it, find a wreck with no passenger airbag, and steal the dummy resistor for it. But as said already, it's illegal, gonna void your insurance, and I'd rather have a airbag hit me, than a billet wheel.

So what about tracking down a nice Momo leather one, made specifically for Ford, keep the air bag, keep it legal. Do a search in the forums and your likely to find some pictures of one.

Exactly my thoughts also, depending on what $$$ your willing to spend, you could go ghia/xr/gt/upper models..

I would never remove the airbag permentaly. Its just unsafe.

Mate I got a AU XR leather wheel in my car and it looks horn....
s**t better looking than the original and any billet item... |

As long as you replace an airbag steering wheel with anothe airbag steering wheel, you're safe. If you intend to remove it, disconnect the battery for about 1/2 hour before physically removing the steering wheel.

Ive had mine off a few times, thats not a problem, but I would like to put a billet steering wheel on and what I dont understand is why its illegal to remove it when later model cars didnt come out with them from factory!

Youve answered your own Q - the fact it illegal isnt coz it doesnt have one as thats fine, its the fact that it DID have one and you have removed it.
Dont shoot the messenger, but honestly it will be more trouble than its worth, are you saying you dont like any or the momo ford wheels at all?

yeah, it illegal to remove/modify any factory fitted safety devices - airbags, seatbelts, etc.

You havnt answered the Q, do you not like any of the MOMO ones?
JETXR, not sure if his wheel had airbag or not, but if it didnt he couldnt insure it, drive it legally nor sell it with roadworthy in current stae. As I said its ALOT of hassel for nothing.

i wouldn't mind getting a nice momo xr wheel, does anyone know where to get them cheap? Does the AU steering wheel fit EF/EL?

You're right, JETXR has no airbag, so if JETXR has done it, why don't you do it. HEY, JETXR is gonna jump off a bridge! Sounds like fun!
Sorry, I hate it when people d**k that car... If you don't want an airbag, get a car that never had one. Removing a cars safety features is a big no no. The ford Momo wheels are schmick as anyway...
