f&*$#$ up somewhere... the top vent just stays open even when im pressing mode.. all the buttons work much better now though! :D
but the whole top vent thing being open the whole time sucks... time to pull it apart again

You must have been low on vacumn with the car turned off. Once engine running again the vacumn reservoir fills up (or empty's out) and the vent system can work again.

Should have taken pitcures and done a doco up for it. I know these things annoy a lot of people!

Yeah I had the same problem in my EF, got a new climate control for only $50 and put that in. Since then I actually took the old one apart and cleaned it, works like new :D So now I have a spare

Went round all the wreckers and got quoted around the $275 mark. Someone on here was selling one and all he wanted was $50 so i snapped it up.

here are the pics!~
Image
what it looks like once the dash is off!
you can see all u need to do it unscrew the screws holding the CC in place. (only 4, one in each corner)

Image
once off, all u have to do is push these clips in being carefull not to push too hard. once all uncliped.. slide out of case gently.

Image
this is the back, unscrew the 5 screws holding it in place. once undone gently pull apart. remember where the buttons go!!

Image
now once apart wipe the contacts on the silivon (the black dots shown by the arrows) and where they meet the circuit board.

now, reverse steps putting car back together! GOOD LUCK

a little tip for when the carbon on the buttons wear out. a small piece of aluminium foil the same size as the pad can be super glued on to replace the worn carbon, the same can be done for remotes at home. and to test IR remotes is to get an am radio and set it near the bottom end of the scale (not on a station) turn up the volume a bit and use the remote near the internal antenna, you will hear pulsing sounds to tell you that its working...

Just a thought, those who have had this trouble with their CC buttons, are the cars smoker's cars or previously been smoker's cars? Just wondering what's causing the bad contact.

Also on the IR remote controls, if I point a remote at my video camera and press a button you can actually see the pulsing on the viewfinder...

Must be smoker cars or very bad luck with LOTS of use..
Mine, both of them are still like brand new - wonder what makes them die like this; its the 1st ive ever heard of it!
Good work on the info with pics tho, very helpful for those who may need it in the future, thumbs up!
