Hi Phongus,
There is a resistor at the back of the instrument cluster that controls the variable dimming for the gauges. This could possibly be burnt out or loose. Pull out the cluster and see if this is the case. They'd only cost about $2 max from an electronics store. There is a doco somewhere with a picture of the resistor on the cluster. cheers |

yeah if you have a look at the dash cluster upgrade doco it tells you about the resistor. They are really about 5c which even a homeless person can buy.

Fairmonts and higher don't have that resistor (47ohm). Have you tried adjusting the brightness with parkers on and then off ???

i can only change the dimming when parkers or lights are on.....so i dunno whats wrong with it. the problem is everything else seems to be dimming fine...i can adjust them properly besides the cluster....the LCD in the cluster is brighter as well but the lights for the backing of the cluster and the needles don't seem to brighten or dim on command. so either loose wire or something is broken....

is that supposed to make a difference ?? sometimes I reckon my cluster is a little dimmer than the day before but can't really figure it out.
