I have speakers in the kickpannels as pictured.
I'm looking to cover them without affecting the sound. 1. I can cut out the middle of the kickpannel and then cover the whole lot with accoustically transparent cloth. The problem is that this is very thin and how to i fix it to the kickpannel as it will show any glue etc... 2. Use a 7" speaker grill and carpet up to it. But how do i make the edges of the carpet around the whole look neat 3. Mould up a custom push in grill that covers all of the recessed kickpannel part and pushes into position? This seems to be the best option but i'm open to ideas. I'm not looking to make a feature of these in fact the more stealth the better. The kickpannel can be worked on out of the car and just clipped on afterwards as the speakers are mounted in place. <IMG SRC="http://pic14.picturetrail.com/VOL555/2287184/7149236/92862878.jpg">

Hmm good theory.
My suggestion would be take the kickpanel out, carpet it first, then put the speaker back in, then cover with the grille. Makes it nice and neat and still gives you your best sound quality. |

Yeah, actually the speakers fit in behind there and the kick pannel just clips over them so everything can be done outside the car and then just secured in place.

Ta twould make it neater if it was taken outside the car. MAKE IT EASIER TO WORK WITH AS WELL.

Sorry silly question... but why would you want them way down at your feet. They used to be mounted down there in the old XC's and sounded awful. Also on the drivers side they are going to be right at your excelerator pedal.

joolz pyroay has like the best stereo ever sound quality comps won .ect .ect
so im guessing hes gunna change it with his equalizer, and make them sound schmiko.... to go with the rest of the car the guy knows what he is talking about

i understand that he has installed award winning systems but just not sure why he wants them mounted at foot level.
The mid can be raised a bit but just dont wear huge UG-BOOTS!!!! |

I see what your running down there now its a mid-bass system, i guess its to stop the doors from vibrating! are you mounting the tweeters in the doors? anyways with the problem with getting the grill to look neat have you thought of having just the edge of the grill sit into the carpet like the small traingular grills in the parcel shelf. the carpet i think is thick enough for it to sink into it leaving a clean finish. hopefully the plastic surround on the grill can be removed ok. you may also be able to match the color to the carpet.

Kickpanels are long regarded as the best place to mount speaker in car audio (see Tutorial on speaker location)
To close the thread out i ended up making custom fibreglass grills that just sit flush. My car will have custom kick's that show the speakers as a feature but i did not want that look for this one... Yeah doesnt seem too much of a hassle to do, just make sure the carpet is cut out to the exact design as the kickpanel will be, but have a bit extra as you can fold over the carpet on the edges. Same when doing the speaker hole, it will look neater that way as well.
Then with the folded bits at the back you could either glue it or you might be able to do something else. Doing it like that you will have it looking neat and the glue wont show because the edges of the material is on the other side of the kick panel and that will be stuck down ne way. Just an idea.  Hope it made sense...

pretty sure theres enough slack in the wires & hes pushed it up in the footwell...
