Hello All!

I have a problem that seems rather complex to fix.

As many of you may know the EL Fairmont Ghia has five plastic cruise control buttons on its steering wheel, two buttons on the left and three on the right.

Well...

I was removing my prolock several weeks ago after a night shift, I was dog tired and somehow managed to hit two of the buttons with the clublock and break them off. So, now I have two buttons on one side and one button on the other.

Does anyone know if there is a simple way to replace these buttons or am I going to have to pay Ford thousands of dollars to replace the buttons for me?

Hoping someone can help :)

I picked up couple of new set of cruise buttons in cappaccino (the best colour interior) for $55 from Sydney Rd Wreckers. Might be worth while for the price and get them posted as they usually go for around $100 secondhand. Give them a call, they might be able to help cause i'm pretty sure they bought a heap of them

The buttons are easily replaced. Don't go to Fraud!

You can get buttons from wreckers for less than $100. I paid $50 for mine but I had to use EF as I couldn't at that time find any EL ones. One wrecker quoted me $80 but didn't have any at the time.

To change Buttons,

Disconnect battery, Undo the 2 screws in the sides of the wheel hidden under plastic covers, once you have undone these carefully remove air bag cover from centre of wheel, there is no need to disconnect the airbag wires from the wheel hub, instead gently place airbag assembly on top of wheel.

Undo the screws holding the buttons in place, carfully unclip the wires for the buttons from around wheel hub and un-plug

Replace with new buttons, re-install other parts.

You can glue the buttons back together if you have all the bits of plastic...sounds dodgy, but it does work !

Alternatively, ring around some wreckers - speak to either Nick or Darren from Ferntree Gully Auto Salvage...they have all sorts of stuff lying around in the yard !

I'm sure they can send to you up North as well :)

Cheers,
Steve

PS, Top colour interior you have - what colour is the outside of your car - hopefully sparkling burgundy :D

Steve I think its time for an avatar change - also a change in attitude towards exterior colours of cars.....sparkling burgandy (purple) - it's getting old!!!!

Hopefully heritage green!!

A dob of silicone (roof and gutter, its softer than silastic) in between the button and the plastic backing (not PCB) will hold it and will still compress with no rattles. A small piece of tape on the side will hold in place till it sets. Have done all my buttons and still look like new almost 2 years after.
