hey all, just thorght id show you all what im doing.

i started it sunday morning. there is a HEAP of work to do but in the end should be awesome.

basically a mate and i have been discussing this for quite some time. and didnt want to mention it till now as there are a few people i know who take my ideas before i get the chance to start them.

its consists of 2x 12 volt downlights from bunnings. i picked mine up for % bucks a kit which had bulb and transformer (not needed) and the casing itself.

this is my fisrt time fiberglassing and i learnt alot... so when its time for the new sub box i should be a pro :P

i have mounted the downlights onto the panels behind the tail lights.

made a frame, fixed it to the panel, cut a hole for wires and ventilation and fiberglassed it. its getting smoothed over with expanda foam then covered in maroon velour (same as under the glassing)

so far only one person that i know of has these (which is my mate) so hopefully its considered unique.

the wiring side was damn easy. i opted for a relay setup over straight off the boot light circuit just incase of a short i dont melt my car down ;)

so the way it works is when the boot is open it trips the circuit to the relay which opens the circuit from the batters (source from distro block near amp) and straight to the light itself.

i will be adding fuses in the lines just to ensure its all good and propper.

the current globe is a 50 watt halogen :O which it came with. but i am going to jaycar and picking up a LED version which is a 1.5-2watt and produces the same light and doesnt have the heat of a halogen. but thats 2 weeks off due to them asking 40 bucks a globe.
Image

tomorrow i finish the other side and wire it all up neatly.

oh and something for shows, im installing a seperate relay circuit where the power comes from sound activated neon controller so the boot lights flash with the bass ;)

Good to see you've started, and already have progress pics.

I'm keen to see the result. :)

hehe...me and a mate were having the same discussion...but only for fun...such as halogen lights under your wheel arch :P making fun of ricers with neons. I thought about putting neons in the cabin as well as in my boot install to show my install...but thought it was too much hassle.

hope all goes well with yours mate :D. Looks promising.

just wait till you all see what else i have planned for the boot.

i HATE neons with a pashion now. which is why i went halogen style.

ill either be going red lights or if i cant find them in 20 watters will be getting a set of 20 watt ones with glass faces and painting them with globe paint we use on out christmas lights

well i didnt get anything done yesterday due to my daughter here, and it pissing down rain. but the car did get washed. im currently in level 5 water restrictions so thats no washing cars or hosing gardens so during the storm i ran out there with the washing mitt and car wash and washed it down... free way to wash and its natural clean water and it does look awesome now.

today i started the drivers side panel and i can say you get better the more you do it. i did run out of resin but i JUST scraped through so ill have to buy more to fix my bumper and rust hole in the boot seal.

so now both are glassed and currently sitting in the car untill friday when my pay comes in. i have the wires hidden apart from the power and wires to run to the boot light wires. they will be hooked up properly thursday. but i can say that next week when completed these will look a million dollars.

im thinking the new theme will be maroon and gold throughout the car. or keep it maroon and black? opinions anyone?

im uploading a video of the lights working.

next up after these are completed is a new sub box to house 2 new 12's with a box in the middle of the 2 box's which will house the fog machine ;)

then i have to track down a sound control unit to make the lights flash with the bass. then mixed with the fog and the fog spinning round with the movement from the subs should look trick ;)

yeah first up i didnt think they would, but i guess halogen lights do that due to heat.

im hunting down some 100mm computer fans to install behind the lights that way i can blow the heat out into the boot.

Instead of just buying the Jaycar LED lights. Go into a Middy's store, as they have LED's that come with a remote control, that you can cycle in and out of about 16 different colours. You can set them on one particular colour, or have it flash, or kind of work their way into the next colour.
Cost around the $60 but thats with the fitting, and a transformer i think.
Kind of what i had planned for my install when i get around to it.

Just give you more to play with than just the white LED's. For not much more...

does sound like a great unit. however the unit might be controlled by the transformer as i done see how they can fit a computer and IF remote reciever in a bulb.

we dont have a middy's up here in QLD but i will be looking around.

i get the expandable foam on friday so it should be all smooth by saturday then next week covered. cant wait

I'll find out some more about them, next time i'm in Middy's, might be tomoz.
But definately run an LED globe, as the standard dichroic 12V globes throw out huge amounts of heat... You would need a fair bit of room behind it otherwise.
I'll check the prices and specs of the LED ones at Middys down here.
I get them at good prices anyway, as a trade customer...
