Just thought I'd post this incase it may be of some help to someone...

For around 2 months I'd had this annoying creaking noise coming from the drivers side of the dash in my EL Fairmont wagon. I took most of the dash apart and checked that all the screws were tight. I did this on numerous occassions but still the creak persisted. Finally after 2 months I couldn't take it anymore so I took the dash apart yet again then after pressing on the top of the dash I found that the noise was coming from the top of the dash. I removed the 2 screws on the very top of the dash from the panel that covers the factory tweeters and saw a series of zinc plated bolts with 10mm heads so I grabbed the 10mm socket and tightened them all up....I pressed on the dash again and it was quiet, Not a creak to be heard. I put everything back together and took the car over some rough roads and it is now free from any annoying creaks.

So if you happen to have any annoying creaks in your E series dash, You might want to check what I did as it may be the solution to your problem.

One of the plastic sections where the zinc bolts go on my dash is cracked so I put a big washer in and once secured by the zinc bolt it holds nicely.

I've got the same thing, it is very annoying on dirt roads.

As for your description, I thought you were going to end it along the lines of "I took the entire car apart and finally the ashtray fell open and my missus' 2 earrings were in there", like that supercheap ad.
