Hold the cluster trip meter button down for 10 secs with the key in the "on" position

no he is just pulling your leg ... you need to have the boot and bonnet open at the same time - then get two people to close them together while you hold down the fuel flap button with your foot pushing down the brake pedal. This should work after a couple of goes, but if you have Cold Chisel - Flame Trees playing at the same time it will work first off!!!

The spanner symbol is permanent I'm afraid. Once it's been displayed for longer than three seconds it burns its image into the LCD and there's no way to get rid of it.

We could be lying though...

alternatively, you could seekout a native american indian shaman, and get him to teach you the "make the spanner-man bad spirit go away" dance, or you could try what i advised before..it does work lol

Greg, shame on you for not pointing out that performing the above actions whilst listening the 'Live in Alice Springs' version of Flame Trees is known to actually erase all information stored in the ECU, BCM and other associated car-computer modules, rendering the car undriveable, and the service spanner and oil light to be permanently displayed... Tsk Tsk.
