Hi all.
I have had a play with the factory faces on my speedo and tacho for my old faithful EA. You will notice that I have rotated both faces to extend the range of each.....6500 RPM Tacho and 220KM/hr Speedo. The factory gauges will actually cover this extended range by simply repositioning the needles. How this affects the accuracy of the gauges by changing the zero point angle of the needle is yet to be determined. I intend on using white needles too. I guess I was just bored with the plain faces. When I print these the black background is blotchy due to my erasing part of the old faces. If anyone can give me pointers on how to make the backgrounds jet black it would be appreciated immensely. Once I get these sorted, and the other four faces for oil pressure, volts, fuel and temp, I provide a link for anyone who wants a copy to use or play around with. Any opinions on improvements would also be appreciated. Thanks. Chris Last edited by chris1966 on Fri Mar 17, 2006 2:59 pm, edited 3 times in total. |

I'd question the accuracy of the gauges after this mod.
I would get them recalibrated by VDO who manufacture the gauges.

Yep, I have already stated that. However, the spacing between the numbers hasn't changed; only the start and end point. So effectively, they should read as good as factory....provided the 24 degrees or so lower that the needle sits at zero has minimal effect on calibration - if that make sense.
Any budding photoshop wizards out there? Chris |

can you post the pics are their full resolution. it may be the original scan was blotchy thus needs cleaning up. Other wise maybe it's your printer and/or paper not able to take so much ink.

Thanks for the quick look. I'm sure it something I've done because all the blotches are over areas I had erased things from.
Here they are in full size. Much bigger than original size. I use scaling to print them. PICS REMOVED TO SAVE DL QUOTA I hope the mods don't mind the huge sizes. They wont be there long anyway. I'd hate to have to do it all again. Took me hours and I've never used photoshop before. I'm sure layering and such would have made it easier. Thanks again. I just printed one out and it came out perfectly (I didn't change it in any way).

Kool!!!!!
Never had a problem with my printer before....oh well. How much would you charge to print them out for me? I don't expect you to do them for nothing. I'll have to have a play around with the scaling so you could get them the right size. I wish I knew how to resize them so you could just print them original size. I have to do the other 4 gauges, but I think it will all look okay once its done. If your not interested inprinting them I'll approach a printing business too see what they would charge. Thanks again data_mine. Chris |

would work in theory, except the needles would still retain thier original sweep, meaning although the guage would show 0-220km, the needle would still travel its original 0-200km or so, and the tacho would still stop at 6,000 rpm
a better way to do it if you're going to go to the trouble of sending the cluster back to VDO for re-calibration, would be to keep the original guage dimensions, but make more graduations in its range (like, keep 0 where it was originally, and change 200km/h to read 250km/h, and then adjust all the points in between to suit

Incorrect my friend. Both gauges do indeed travel the extra distance. I have tried it and it works.

The postage alone would make me printing them prohibitive. A print shop will do it for a few $.
You don't WANT to resize them, you want to keep all those pixels there so when you do print them they come out in high resolution. If you resize them smaller, then print them the print will be blocky (possibly fuzzy if your printer tries to 'correct') and crap. Can you post a photo of what your printer spat out?

Get rid of those silly red marks above the 100km/h mark. Looks too vn like :p Just my opinion of course

Just thought I'd post a complete pic of the cluster. Some may think it sucks but I like it and I designed it for me. So stiff s**t if you think it is crap....
If anyone wants a better quality pic please PM me your email address and I'll send you the 650KB version. This one is only 86KB. The photoshop version is 17.8MB... Chris |
