Get a climate control unit out of an EBII. They have the black buttons and are a direct swap for the grey buttoned EA-EB1 style unit. Unfortunately the ED version is not compatible. The easiest way to pick the EBII unit from the ED one is that the ED unit has a "CFC free" logo on it. EBII doesn't, so if you see one that says CFC free, avoid!
And yes, the ambient button will work, just as long as the sensor in front of the radiator isn't dodgy. The sensor is already there. It's definately a worthwhile mod.

The EA-EB (or NC1) climate control unit still uses the ambient sensor as part of the climate control system but doesn't have a button to access it. The sensor is situated under the top section of the radiator support panel just near the bonnet catch.
All you need is the climate control unit (and the black buttoned EBII or ED trip computer and demister switch to match, so it doesn't look odd) and it's easy to swap.
