I thought the airbag is deployed with compressed co2?

Mr Ed wrote: hey can anyone tell me how to get the airbag module with the safing sensor in it out? i can only see one bolt in it and i've got that out and its unpluged but i cant get it out still.. is there more bolts i cant see?
From memory there is 3 bolts. 2 on top and towards the back of the unit. You've obviously only seen the lowest/front/middle onee. Much easier to get at with the dash out, or at least tilted forward. |

Time to revive this old thread. Why you might ask? Because I now own this car. The state I got it in was drivers side airbag replaced but not reconnected (and the bulb removed). I have now after swapping over the crash sensors from my EF for (some) peice of mind, reconnected the airbag. The drama is the light is still on and following the diagnostic instructions on the excellent airbag guide does not seem to budge it. It's a late model feb 98 EL but it does have the diagnostic pin, is it as I read in the document only resettable by ford..?

Depends what the code is - if the code is 'repairable', i.e. needs to be rectified, then you won't be able to reset it til this happens.

Change the module - can be done in situ.

And if its is a requirement that the airbag system is retested every 10 years then i wonder how many people actually do do this. Most people with these older cars usually don't go back to the dealer for service when a car is as old as that, and rather have a trusted workshop they usually go to instead. Interesting indeed.

Have you tried re-setting it by the pins and wire near the fusebox under the dash?

yep, to no avail. I'll have a whack at swapping the control module over.. Murphy is watching here as I just had the whole dash out. will have to do it the hard way

Ah the joy of this task.. my fav place in the whole world has to be on my back cramped under that steering column. The memories.. changing the 50th brake switch, installing clutch pedals, adjusting clutch pedals. fixing weird leaks.. and now this one. I think i'm going to take my next holiday under the steering column because its just so awesome
1 bolt to go

data_mine wrote: SpuDTE, there's no requirements to get airbags checked. phongus, there's no cylinder of gas, the gas to inflate the airbag is created by a (really small) amount of a certain explosive. As for the airbag deploying unexpectedly. There's three fail safes in the EF/EL airbag system. two crash sensors, a 'safing' sensor, and electronics diags. If any one reads funny the airbag unit will blow the fuse, killing the system. Sure there wasn't any airbag warning lights previously? No messing around with the steering wheel/electrical circuits recently? i thought it was just sodium something-or-other that gets ignited by a spark and produces a massive chemical reaction in the form of nitrogen gas ?
