Hey guys, Just thought id write to tell everyone that the other day while driving along the highway my airbag exploded in my face! So far i've taken it to the local ford dealer and they cant figure out why, and i've given ford australia a ring but they didnt want to know me. Seems like im going to have to replace the whole system :( but just makes me wonder how many more time bombs are out there!!

i don't trust airbags etc i have seen some f**k UP crashes and the air bags are deployed etc.. a faulty sensor can cause that..

just get a horn pad from the wreckers minus the airbag, then just take the airbag light out of the cluster. no one will ever know, until a serious crash that is.

That's when you wish you paid the however amount of dollers to get an airbag put back in...

lucky you didnt crash or something! you should go to the media or something about this. like send something into the cars guide in the friday sun. then ford would probably fix it up for you.

haha, yes very true. only being impaled upon the steering column does one realise the error of ones dodgy ways.

when you think about it, Efs and VSs came out with airbags from around 94/95 i'm pretty sure and its now 2008, so thats 14 years with these things being on the road. And if its is a requirement that the airbag system is retested every 10 years then i wonder how many people actually do do this. Most people with these older cars usually don't go back to the dealer for service when a car is as old as that, and rather have a trusted workshop they usually go to instead. Interesting indeed.

how does one test an airbag? Smack the front bumper with a soft mallet and see if it deploys? :P

crikey, what If you were doing 100k's or so?

When I wrote my car off 8 years ago the airbag was the only injury I suffered. It scratched my arm!

Doubt it, pretty well known fact reliable airbag life is about 10 years

Or IS it? Does the ford user manual book say anything about getting it checked? If not then you may be on to something!

How exactly do they check the airbags anyway? I mean the only way you know if it works is if it deploys. If they are just checking sensors, then that is just as useless I reckon.

If they have a special way to test the chemical content of the gases within the cylinder, then that's understandable.

How much is it to do a test anyway out of curiosities sake?

SpuDTE, there's no requirements to get airbags checked.

phongus, there's no cylinder of gas, the gas to inflate the airbag is created by a (really small) amount of a certain explosive.

As for the airbag deploying unexpectedly. There's three fail safes in the EF/EL airbag system. two crash sensors, a 'safing' sensor, and electronics diags. If any one reads funny the airbag unit will blow the fuse, killing the system. Sure there wasn't any airbag warning lights previously?

No messing around with the steering wheel/electrical circuits recently?

Hmmm, thanks data. I thought it was sort of like a mixture of small amounts of chemicals which produces a whole lot of gases to fill the bag rapidly...maybe that's the explosives then hahaha.
