I have an EF/EL interior in my EA and the electric windows work fine, but the drivers side window switch has the usual up/down and also has "AUTO" on it. Can someone tell me what this means and how to get it to work. This may sound a stupid question but my switch unit may be faulty.

Auto down, switch will remain in the down position, without you holding it, until the window is all the way down, then flicks back to off. Only the drivers window switch has this.

isnt the "auto down" on EF-EL's controlled by the BEM?

I dont think so I could not see anywiring on the circuit diagram attached to the BEM. The electronics seem to be on the switch module itself. My drivbers door switch works just like the others, it does not stay down. I thought there might have been a secret to how you get to work. As I said before mine might be faulty...???????

The switch on mine actually stays down, then clicks off just after the window gets to the bottom, so I'm assuming its all in the switch.

My EB has "auto down" on the driver's window. Then again it might be a dodgy switch!

does it flick back off by itself? Being a Ghia I would believe it has auto down.

The auto down is on a small timing cicuit im sure. There is a small chip and a few resistors on the switch circuit board along with a solenoid to 'flick' the switch back off. Nothing to do with the BEM.

All i can say is, i wish i had power windows!!! hmm mite read the doco for that, my auto electric skills are getting better, maybe power windows are the next big project!!!

Just thought I would add to this topic I've got an NF lane and my auto down switch sometimes stays in the auto down position after the window got to the bottom and if I don't flick it off manually the switch gets quite warm and then the window doesn't go up or down until the switch cools off. So my guess is there is a thermal contact in the switch which warms up then flicks off when the window motor starts to overload (similar in theory to your ciggy lighter)..

There is a thermal fuse in the fuse panel (a big grey bastard from what i can remember). This is put in as a safty aspect to stop the window motors from burning out.
I just pulled the window switches out the other day and cleaned them all out. My auto down always used to stick but now i have cleaned out all the dust bunnines and COKE (!) i have found that it doesnt stick any more. Mohekn: power windows are great, when the work properly lol! Because i use mine alot, the runners are beginning to wear out, thus having to push the front window rearward while closing it.
