Hey all,
Just wondering if anyone can help me out with an electrics issue Im having at the moment... okay.. First of all its a 91 EB Fairmont V8. Has digital speedo, tacho, clock, climate control etc. When the head lights are on and I am driving at night, at some point the dash lights(all of them) including the climate control display & clock flash on intermittently or stop altogether. When I turn off the head lights the dash displays will flash intermittently and there is a kind of weird clicking noise(similar to an indicator). Lastly, when the interior light is switched on the dash display lights up fine and stays lit up. I dont know if its related but the air con/climate control seems to go up and down quite a bit too, but I thought it may be just adjusting the temp. Can anyone give me some advice on this or had a similar problem? Any help appreciated Cheers Pat |

u might want to check the relays. and see if any of them are stuffed. if not one of the positive cables at ur battery might be corroded and needs to be cut, restripped and then put back on. if not there might be a short somewhere behind the dash?
on my EA when i turned on the headlights my car just turned off because there was a positive power cable that was hanging on one copper strand from a 4 guage wire. after rewiring it worked like a charm. hope that helped phong =P~

Thanks for that phongus.
From memory the battery terminals did look a bit corroded. I'll have a closer inspection tomorrow. Hopefully I'll get it sorted soon... Cheers |

The battery seems fine. I replaced all the fuses today and the problem still occurs...
Looks like it might be a job for an auto electrician |

No I didnt check the relays. What is the best method to check them?
Should I check the relays in the interior fuse compartment or are there more in the engine bay? Cheers Pat |

Relays should be located near the battery, under a black plastic cover.
Pull 'em out, check relay holders and the relays themselves for corrosion, fouling, etc. I had a problem with my auto a while ago, where I'd turn my high beams on and the auto would switch to LHM. It sucked. I pulled out all the relays and put them back in again, as well as cleaning all the terminals (battery included) and everything was back to normal again! Incidentally, I stopped popping globes too. Hopefully it's just a dirty relay connection for you. -Dave-

OK. I have checked and cleaned all the relays today.
The box that they sit in was a bit filthy so I cleaned it out also. Once I put them back in I tested the lights, same thing happened. Im starting to think it could be more like a wiring/circuit fault. Would it be worth replacing the relays as a safety measure as well as checking for a bad earth? Thanks Pat |

Check your wiring first before replacing things.
My thermofans died on the weekend, and today will be the first chance I get to check them out. Before I replace anything, I'm going to rewire it straight to the battery, because I suspect it's the ignition wire which is stuffed (somewhere... the wire runs all the way into the cabin to a ciggy lighter, and it's wired up hobo style) The fuse seems fine (first thing I checked), albeit bloody hot :S I'm assuming it's either an earthing fault (it could be), or the thermoswitch itself, or the ignition wire. I doubt its the thermofans. But all this is speculation, I gotta get off my a** and check it out! Sorry to hijack your thread mate -Dave-
