Dont know if this should be here or not... Id call it interior bits eh??
Anyone willing to share their engine bay detailing efforts? My mate whom drives a car with three diamonds on the front has painted his rocker cover and intake mainfold with a funky grean and pearl to make pleanty blingbling and I wuz thinking on dressing up mah boring factory engine bay with some glitz? I have done the belt cover and next will be radiator header tank. See pics in mah user gallery. Drew

Awsome... what an amazing difference the rocker cover made....
Can you outline some do's and donts regarding taking the rocker cover off and protecting the head while its off??? I plan to do that in the near future. BTW the colour I have used is in the Ford section of touch-ups called vivid blue. I was thinking on doing the r/cover the same as mah belt cover, but would it be too much? Should I get a pro to do it or just take my time and do it real carefull myself. Im worried that the paint will come off in a year or so and make everything look yuk. Drew

Theres 2 ways to go. Very clean original look such as timmeh's effort (nice job by the way) or the full bling effort such as wild colours, braided hoses, polished alloy etc. There is plenty of cheap braid kits on ebay to be had for about $40. Also seen some chrome split conduit in various sizes for $20 each. Looking at what youve done already blings for you (cant stop now).

I must confess my avatar is not my engine bay unfortunately. I found it on a Ford site somewhere. I like it because its an EF XR6 like I got. Mine is clean but nothing like that. Please dont hate me |

I'm going to respray the rocker cover on the AU gloss black with red INTECH OHC most likely this weekend. I've just got to buy a new seal for it, some degreaser and some paint.

This is mine, personally i think its to red although i like it. It'll soon change
Rocker cover + Intake will be in Saffron and other bits will be black/chromed. All in time of course (and thanks to jase for a donor rocker for me!) If you intend on spraying stuff, i do suggest VHT undercoat high temp paint, 1-3 coats. The colour you want (doesnt have to be VHT if you dont want, say you want a colour they dont have) then a few coats of clear ontop. As the legend Matti once said (the spray can expert i tell you) is do light coats and take your time.. Let each coat dry before adding another and let the colour coat dry completely and then add the clear. Alternatively, sand it back and smoothen your parts out and pay someone to spray it in 2pack as you'll have the same finish as your car's body paint. You can also get vacuum silicon hoses in a variety of colours, make sure if you intend to use them for water or fuel to check the rating and especially fuel as im sure they'll melt through! |

How much colour paint is required for the rocker cover? I may get some touchup paint mixed to match the car

man thats a sweet looking engine bay there gazza!
a question: how do you keep the black plastics looking wet & clean all the time? give them a coat of plastic clearcoat or something? i wouldn't mind getting mine to look a bit nicer...

dont spray flexible rubbers as the paint peals then looks really s**t.. lol armourall or some plastic-shine lubricant. With the rocker cover its best you get someone to spray it professionally for you as then you get a thick coat and a very nice finish. Find the colour you want online with the paint code and tell the spray painter.. should cost about $40-100 depending on where you go/how good you bargain! (remember, primer -> then colour -> then clear if you do it yourself) Idea's : Silicone Hose Replacements Smoothening Rough Edges Before Spraying Chrome Bits Painted Bits Neaten up your cables Otherwise armourall for rubber/plastics. |
