Sounds like a very fiddly and expensive exercise.

As Ford themselves ran a FG system into a BFII body, but i think they are worlds apart, i don't think the normal DIYer it would take ages and be as 93EB said a fiddly and expensive as the FG is what like 9 months old or something.

I don't know how well the stuff would actually fit, seeing as the passenger section of the car was redesigned for FG (unlike AU-BF).
Then the electrics are very different. A lot more computer control, and multiplexed signals. Meaning you'd probably have to convert the cars entire loom to FG spec.

I've heard of a complete BA dash/ICC/heaterbox/BEM running on its own, outside of a car. Apparently, just power and ground in the right places does the job. So I don't see how the FG will be any different? The question is probably how close the BA and FG are in mounting points for the dash, and also door trims.

Well now that the FG is approaching 3 years and parts are starting to flood the wreckers, I've managed to get hold of all the parts needed for conversion.
Trial fitting the dash to a BA shell, the dash sat 2 inches away from the windscreen. Easily fixed though, I had the dash end brackets custom made to suit the BA front door cavity, and it now sits in nicely. The other mounting points (the floor and middle of windscreen) met up perfectly with the BA mounting points . A bit of the front of the dash material where it meets the windscreen needed to be shaved off, as FG has a squared off windscreen while BA is more curved. The FG 6SP ZF shifter mounted up perfectly to the 2002 mounting points, and the console sat nicely on the floorpan, meeting perfectly with the mounted dash. The forward part of the console sits a bit up in the air, but not really a concern as its secured by the lower part of the dash anyway. Door trims will be the next obstacle, my plan is to drill holes into the BA inner door shell that will match the mounting points of the FG trim, provided that the FG trim is not physically bigger. Door lock mechanism will be the next major hurdle. I may just leave the BA trims though, if they still manage to close with the new dash installed. Then I will need to cut/shut the door looms. Electrically, the BA will become an FG. I have sourced every module/loom to match an FGXR6T.. ABS/DSC Module, Airbag Controller, BEM, Steering Column/Key, ABS Wheel Speed Sensors (BA ones don't work in FG), ICC, Cluster, and a matching FGXR6T270/ZF6/ECU to fill the bonnet. Heater Box I am 90% sure its identical, same with the HIM module. I have the FG items on standby in case not. From what I can gather, the rear seats are identical in setup and mounting points to BA. Front Seats I am yet to find out... waiting for the set of new FG XR6T 50th Anniversary Leather to be fitted |
