hi
im trying work out how i can get power to a flashing led when the ignition is off.. so the led only flashes when the ignition is off and when you turn the ignition on it stops flashing.. like how a alarm led will flash.. any ideas?? |

Get a 12v Flashing LED and wire the positive to somewhere that has 12v all the time and wire the negative to the 12v when the ignition is on. When the ignition is switched off this will drop down through loading to 0v and the LED will flash.

hi
so in conecting 12v to both terminals on the led it wont it act like a fuse and blow..??? so when the ignition is on there is 12v going to both terminals of the led and when i turn the ignition of the volts on the ignition wire drop down to 0 is that right?? but does the ignition wire switch to earth to create the circuit when off.. so then the led has constant power on one terminal and a earth..??? |

I'm assuming you're doing something similar to a smartlock LED.
There's no damage to be done wiring it up as mentioned, only thing is the 0 volts end must be a short to earth when power is off, this may not necessarily be the case. I'd say the easiest way is to wire your flashing LED to a 5 pin relay: pin 30: battery 12v (perhaps use courtesy light power) pin 87a: goes to your flashing LED, other LED wire goes to earth. pin 86: ignition 12v pin 85: earth. Make sure your LED has correct polarity.

With 12v on both legs of the LED no current will flow and no damage will occur. When the ignition is off, every thing connected to it will give you the return path to ground for the LED to light. As there is only 20mA or so able to flow though the LED this will not cause any issues.

thanks guys i haD thought about using the 5 pin relay but thats alot of extra wire plus the relay just to make this itty bitty led to flash.. 
so i will try what twason said and see what happens... |

hi
unfortunatly it doesnt work the way twason said.. sorry but i guess im going to go with the 5 pin relay as i know it will work.. its not that important it only for looks because i seen a couple of people peeking in my car when it has been parked outside and i havnt got a alarm or smartlock at the moment.. its just make people think it has a alarm.. for a couple of weeks until i install smartlock. thanks for your nelp |

yea
i tried the acc wire aswell i even tested it with a multi meter when my ignition is off the ign and acc wires are open circuit so there is no resistance or continuity at all maybe the ignition is slightly different between models.. ??????? |

A good point to pick this wires up is at the back of the radio. There is 12v and ACC that feed the radio try there.

i was going to suggest the acc and the constant 12v from the radio but its been said in the about post by twason.
Worst case is you have if flashing all the time. There are kits that you get from jaycar for about $30 and its a car alarm. Basically build it and it gets connected to the door sensor. You will have 5 seconds to get into the car and flick the little switch before it starts making a big noise. You could also get a 12v flashing LED from jaycar/d**k and hook it up to a switch and constant 12v. Just flick the switch at night. Is it possible to put your car in the drive way or behind a gate/roller door.?

its all cool now i ended up using the 5 pin relay its now working good
but its only temporary untill i get a alarm fitted.. usually the car is behind locked gates but ive got some junk in the drivway which stops me from getting behind the gates... |
