They could put the relay in the fuse box in the engine bay, you wouldn't hear it there, just means they will have to run cables through the rubber grommet in the firewall.

Thanks for all your help guys. I had the capacitor installed today and it works a treat. There's complete silence when the neons turn on/off, and they look awesome at night time!

I noticed a similar problem to the OP, when I did LED tail lights on my EL, I noticed they're always glow ever so faintly when the car was on. Some quick diagnostics with a multimeter showed there was a residual voltage at the brake light socket all the time (with the car on).

I chalked it up to the BEM keeping the brake light filaments 'warm' (regular bulb wouldn't make any light out of such a low voltage) so they'd light fractionally faster when the brakes were applied. It didn't bother me, nor did it cause any other problems. I left it alone.

Yep, sounds like the same problem I had.

My only real concern with residual voltage is draining of your battery, but then again, at such a faint voltage it's probably not too big a deal.

Yeh got exactlly the same set up in my eb, same color and i did mine myself, but i hooked up mine to a switch should there be any issues with roadworthy/police at all.
Hooked it up to the cig lighter power (as i dont smoke) and set that to a seperate fuse so nothing goes boom. And hooked it all to a switch which is neatly installed on the handbrake cover plastic bit (ea-ed) owners will know that little bit of plastic.) looks clean and only took me and a mate 45 minutes to do. Looks just as good.
But i do recommend switches just makes any issues like this go away.

G'day EbSpak.

Yeah I did consider the switch option. Because I own a BA Mk I, there's an empty socket underneath the fog light button (where the Traction Control button goes) which would've been perfect to link the neons onto. However, I didn't really want the burden of a switch. I rather liked the fact that if you're approaching your car at night, you open the door and the footwells are washed in blue automatically so you and/or passengers can see where they are stepping.

Had a few problems with afterglows, but the staff at Autobarn were more than willing and helpful in getting it corrected with the relay/capacitor really quickly. In addition, they didn't charge me any labour for any of that, as they considered it a correction to their installation, and rightfully so.

The end result I'm very pleased with.

Dedicated power feed to a switch mounted on the dash which goes onto the neons. Manual switch on and off. Easiest way. I got my power feed directly from the battery.

Again you could get a feed from the internal light circuit. Although if you have a GLi, they don't do fade out, so may not be as useful as they turn off straight away.
