For all those who blow their BEM's there is a quick fix to get past the no cluster lights for a while until you can afford to purchase a new BEM.
The few BEM's (all been high series) i have looked at have all had the same problem (usually done by playing with the buttons while putting dash back) This fix fixes everything in the BEM except the dimming of the cluster (LCD's can still dim) This problem is blowing the track between B18 and the dimming chip. The easiest way to fix this is to just solder the two points together! Once thats done, replace and will work like new! (except for the dimming of the dials! but who does that!?! )

I would be using a piece of wire if it blew once, all you have done is add a meltable fuse (i.e. solder)

Looks like a top method of limping the car around (i.e. to go get a new BEM). Nice work.

I take it that is the blown one i sent you, well on the weekend I blew another one, but the track you have described isn't damaged. I have soldered it any way and will refit soon. Have you found any other drama's that may cause this

not as yet... all the ones i have looked at (3) have been caused through the buttons (arial and demister) not connecting properly!

Why buy a new BEM?????
Auto EMF at Southside Ford in Brisbane repair them at a reasonable price, and can test them too. Call and ask for Brett, he tested mine yesterday for me. |
