Anyway, I found absolutely no information available on the wiring of the starter button. So here's what I've found myself. Leading from the button itself is a 3 wire loom, that connects (using a 4 pin white coloured plug) into the ignition loom from the key barrel. This three wire loom is as follows. Green/Red - Earth (for the red LED in the button) Red/Green - +12 when the ignition switch is in the run (II) position. Red/Blue - +12 to activate the starter motor. The Red/Green Red/Blue pair are shorted by the starter button. The red LED gets it's power from the Red/Green wire.

I haven't said what I've done, just provided info on the wiring of the button.
I'm not saying either as it's security/alarm related.

Doesn't look anything like the aux cable. Different number of pins and a different style of plug.

g'day data mine,
did you install this button yourself? I tried last week to install my starter button on my ba xr6 as per the fern tree gully salvage instructions which I sourced from vince in cairns. I followed the instructions to a tee but a couple of the wires were accidently shorted when i bumped them as i didnt want to disconnect the battery as i knew i might have problems with the smartshield being reset. when the wires touched it momentarily cranked the engine over. I connected the the starter button wires into the 16 pin connector under the steering column and the earth end of the loom to the earth on the fuse box.on this same end you have to connect to the 24 pin connector behind the r/h kickpanel. once installed it seemed to crank the engine only when the key was held in the start/crank position . where as i am led to believe you should only have to put the key to the acc position...ie dash warning lights lit up.I confirmed this on an actual GT. I decided to remove the starter button and return things to normal. when i did this i found that the car wouldnt start as per normal. It turned out the ignition barrel switches at the back of the key had collapsed. so.... I have had that fixed and i am still very hesitant to install the button again as it may create the same problem also i have rung 2 ford service deealers and they say that you need a different pcm to accomodate this starter button and also different loom fitted to the car.but i find this hard to believe as heaps of other people on the forums have had them fitted.I also have a friend who is an engineer in ford in melbourne and he says that you dont need to have a different pcm or loom. so at the moment i am at a loose end and hoping that some legend can help me out. cheers flesh |

when the wires touched it momentarily cranked the engine over. Automotive mechanics 101. Always disconnect the battery when working on electrical systems in the vehicle. You will not have smartshield issues on a BA/BF when u disconnect the battry. At worst you will have a poor idle which can be fixed by cleaning the throttle body. The starter button can be done without a different loom however it does require wiring modifications. From a dealership point of view its not worth getting involved in wiring mods as if they do it and it breaks in 9 months technically they have to warrant it. Also data_mines vehicle is a genuine FPV vehicle and came from the factory with the starter button. |

That is exactly how they install them at fpv as i spoke to on eof the guys that fits them on teh production line and he said that was exactly spot on - it takes them 5 minutes to do! My susggestion - try it again with your battery disconnected and you should be right

I though the anti-start was part of the BEM, not the button (either itself, or part of the changes that are made to implement it). The BF wagon at work (no starter button obviously) won't engage the starter motor if it's running.
