Old school smith gauges were aweful, the new stuff is great, Almost everything british ran smith stuff. back in the 50-70's that is, One of the funniest things I have witnessed thanks to smiths, doing the east coast rally, E-Type Jag, was navi for the run. Revs were 3700rpm, the smith guage was bouncing between 2500rpm the 4000rpm, all the smiths stuff I have seen fitted to brittish stuff of this era all did it, just a very bouncy gauge.
But the later stuff is great.

Analogue. My boost and oil pressure are analogue only, however AFR has a digital readout with an analogue style outer ring.

VDO analogue gauges have been my preference for 30 years.
I just fitted mechanical oil pressure & oil temp gauges in the centre console. It's more interesting watching needles move up and down than numbers flashing on and off. The soft glow of illuminated gauge faces is a nice effect too.

All mine are analogue. I run fuel pressure, oil pressue, nitrous pressue and boost as analogue, But i have a digital water temp. It has an analogue face with a needle that sweeps, but recieves its input from a digital sensor.
The Boost and water are inside the car, the others are outside, and i run only Autometer sport comp guages. They are the same price as the cheap stuff from super cheap, if you know where to look to buy them Brett

re autometer pricing, yeah here (in Oz) they're f**k expensive. Buy from the US (especially now with the AUS$ > US$) and they are very reasonable - still not the cheapest stuff around, but much better quality.
Ford's (and a lot of others) OEM dashes/gauges are VDO. Good solid gauges, not always the most feature packed or aesthetic though. And Brett, I think we were talking about the gauge face analogue vs. digital. A analogue face with electric sender is fine (all of mine are electric senders). All nasty engine bay stuff stays in the engine bay. And the boost/vac gauge is just as quick as any mechanical one I've seen.

The Gauges shown are just for an example. The question is "display" not "brand" or "mechanical v electrical". When I do pick the gauges they will be electric senders to the gauge. Todays cars do not lend themselves too well for running mechanical type gauges into the cabin.

my xr6 isen't turbo , so i just watch the vacuum gauge plummet to zero as i "clean the injectors"
