Hey guys,

I was looking at purchasing a Speed/Red Light Camera alerter since theres heaps on the way to uni. I was looking at Road Angel and GPS Guider which speak/light up to give warnings and connect via the cigerette lighter.

But I was thinking for this price would I be better off to get a GPS system and connect it to my DVD headunit and have a display on the screen? Can people tell me the different GPS systems they have or know of, how easy to connect and accurate they are, how I can put speed/red light camera alerts onto my GPS system and can I view it while listening to music or what happens with that? I've got a GPS input on my headunit and its a JVC DVD Exad Unit.

Thanks guys,
I appreciate any help or suggestions you can give me.

Go GPS...road angel doesn't do everything for you - it only alerts you of black spots and stuff that's available via GPS anyway (from memory)...of course the illegal radar detector (dectectors lol) that are good, but you don't wanna get caught with one...personally GPS is the way to go...they're legal and better than nothing. Speak to RJ3820 about his experience with GPS.

Hey bloke - how was the drive back North ?!

Here's some info on Road angel :

Image

· Professional in-car dock included
· Premium maps from WhereIs and Road Sense
· Navigation Voice Assist with safety assistance from Peter Brock
· Includes 540,000 points of interest (POIs)
· Planning, driver safety and portable walking modes

With 2D and 3D mapping, instant re-routing and a colour touch screen, Navigator is clearly streets ahead!

Navigator is purposely designed for vehicle as well as portable walking navigation. It comes with the innovative professional dock, proDockâ„¢ for in-vehicle use. The dock has an integrated loudspeaker delivering crystal clear instructions at volume levels suitable for the family car as well as commercial and heavy vehicles. The dock eliminates cable clutter and recharges the Navigator portable battery as you drive to your destination. Click out of the dock and Navigator becomes pocket portable. It weighs in at only 200 grams and has a full four hour battery life to become your walking navigation companion to over 540,000 points of interest across Australia.

To see More Info visit : www.roadangel.com.au

Not too sure on radar detectors...pretty sure they just alert you when they sense a radar in the vicinitiy...in what capacity / range, I'm unsure of...I think some others on here will be able to comment a bit further than myself. AU2SR was looking into it at one stage.

They are called (believe it or not) radar detectors!
They are highly illegal, only work on police radar, but not lidar.
Big fines and lots of demirit points.

Is $159 an alright price for one of these alerters? How much approximately would Satellite Navigation connected onto my headunit be?

I have a MIO 168 PDA with intergrated navigation. It work great and it was only $750, not to bad I didn't think considering it was a PDA as well. It came with Co Polite Live software for the navigation. Only real problem is it doesn't know what routes are full of traffic and sometimes takes you shortest way but the most popular way. The PIO's (points of intrest) work great, they can either be just displayed on the screen or voice alerts when approcahing. This includes FIXED speed/red light cameras.
If ya can find a use for the PDA like I did you may as well go that way and get the two for the same price as a NavMan or Tom Tom.
Cheers

I was able to download a cracked version of tom tom mobile navigator and found an australian map on a torrent site... Funny enough i put all this on my nokia mobile 7210, it goes onto your mem card and runs off there. I bought a bluetooth gps box off ebay... got it for $90 pop that on your dash and away you go, the tom tom system tells you point to point nav via voice and real time directions on screen... The program itself as a package with the bluetooth gps for mobiles has only just hit our shores and costs about 500 dollars for the phone program... do the smart thing and get the bluetooth gps off ebay and search torrent sites for the program and aust map all in all you save a fortune for something that is very basic...

Oh and also you can get red light and fixed speed camera software for free of the net that is compatable for the tom tom mobile 5 :P
