you may have to bust it open.
give it good bash with your hand while pressing the remote.

the lock is hard to get at from inside

Take off the rear no plate, remove the recessed bolt behind it.
From the inside, pull/pry the plastic strip along the base of the rear tailgate window, you may be able to pull the whole panel area off the lip that holds it on.
You should now be able to flex the panel to get to and remove the 4 bolts that hold the rear no plate surround to the tailgate back.
You'll now be able to access the lock assy - the pull rod has probably slipped out of it's hole.

i have a similar prob. when it is unlocked and ya pull the handle it wont open. i found out that ya need to have ya fingers right on the tip of the handle and then give the handle a bit of a yank.

got it open
a screwdriver on the locking mech popped it open

fround that the bracket holding the handle had bent slightly and wasent letting it open the lock
rebent the bracket and it all works like new again
I thought fords where built tough just not the brackets holding the handles in place
have also found that the tailgait has started to crack in two places
will have to have that fixed

Thats a pain to remove the assembly, I had to replace the actuator on a EL wagon & god FORD didnt make enough room to just unbolt & remove.
