^^^ Yeahp XR-Lane, but only when I had my foot on the third pedal (remember I had the shift kit under my left foot that changed gears real quick and chirped tyres) and was trying to get the car to loose it's a*** end....
I never once found myself in a totally wrong gear. Quite a few times I forgot to put it into DRIVE and left it in third for ages... And only a few times did I think I had left it in third and hit NEUTRAL coz I was actually already in DRIVE. Mate, I ain't that clever, and therefore anyone can drive without the stopper bits in or with the knob sliding up and down it's shaft) ^ Cheers XR-Fast. Up top for thinking, down bottom for dancing. |

Nah, not really mate... Just have a play yourself... The install would vary so much from knob to knob that I would be merely re-stating the obvious time and time again.
It's not tricky really. Only tricky thing is retain the functionality of the push button, if you wish to. Let us know how you get on... I hate those standard selectors too mate and good to see you changing it! |

You can always install the EF/EL type auto knob into the ED. These look and feel much better, and there are leather versions available too.

Stupid question. What would be the cheaper option? and what colours do the ef/el shifters come in?

{USERNAME} wrote: Stupid question. What would be the cheaper option? and what colours do the ef/el shifters come in? You can get plain GLi EL auto knobs for under $5 at a wreckers. Most of them are a grey plastic, but the Ghia models also had Grey Leather with a chrome button. I have also owned an EL GT Black Perforated Leather gear knob, but have since sold it. You can add the EL type knob to the EB shaft, but you need make a release rod to the correct length. Not that hard to do. Just takes a bit of trial and error. If you want to be more thorough, you can also use the EL shaft and put it in your EB. This results in a lower positioned knob. Much nicer, and you can get chrome shafts too. Cheers BenJ

Awesome. Just like the other half million EF / EL's out there.
Yawn. Someone should start a site called FORDUNMODS. |

I did a similar thing years ago on an auto XW V8 - what I did, tho, if you have a look at the pik posted a few messages ago that shows the `deselection rod' sticking out beyond the thread, I did mine so the new shift knob sat on the thread as per normal, (I also shortened both the threaded bit, and later, the deselection bit) but I just drilled right thru the gear knob (a continuation of the threaded hole in the knob, but with a smaller dia drill bit to match the deselection rod) so that when you do install the knob on the threads, the deselection rod pokes through the hole that now goes right through the knob. I just shortened the deselection rod end and rounded it off so it sat proud of the knob end (hee hee) about 10 mm...that way the bit that sticks out acts as a detent button..just learn to shift holding the knob in such a way that your hand doesn't cover the end (jeez that sounds wrong) and your thumb can then work the new button like a lock out..

I should clarify, the knob I used was just a plain, black, sphere type knob (actually pinched it off a dead lathe at work...)

Yeah mate - I looked at drilling a hole into the knob and putting an extension to the "deselection" shaft through the knob proper... I just figured --- What the hell, found a knob that was transparent blue and fitted BLUE LED's that glow real nice at night time. So I have a blowing blue knob on the end of my shaft without a way to push the middle shaft out of its sprung tension position.
Obviously, for clarification purposes, having a plain black knob stolen from a lathe would allow for more of a King Alfred effect. |

Now --- That's way better. A BA knob. Much better idea.
The title of the thread is ""How to fit a manual gear knob onto a automatic lever"" but putting a BA knob on is a bloody good solution given the idea that the original poster wanted to change the look of the shifter to something more stylish (which, I propose, an EF shifter isn't...) |
