Hey guys just wanting to know how do i fit a manual gear knob onto my automatic lever so i can just push the gear knob down to go from park to whatever?
Has anyone done this before? cheers brett |

i want it to still work like an auto instead of having a crap looking shifter knob but instead of pushing a button in i push the shifter knob down.

So, you want something like this:

I dont see it being too hard, just a matter of making this ones shaft meet the cars shaft, so when you push the button down it pushes the shaft down. I dont know how it would get rid of the trans lock from D-R and the other way while moving, as its doig the same as the standard one.

I await your thread on asking where to get a new gearbox if you do this ! Like said there are reason why they are designed not to get knocked into gear !

How exactly would adding an aftermarket auto shifter affect the lock? All you're doing is extending the shaft.

when driving an automatic with the standard shifter on it does it slide from gear 2 gear NO, You wont be able to change the gears until you push down or something to change them.
Its not a hard thing to answer if you know what im talking about leave a comment if you dont know dont leave a comment. |

There are Aftermarket Auto Shifters around as someone gave you a link on ebay. One thing you probably need to modify is that metal rod that needs to get pressed to change the gears.

I am running a saas manual shift knob and manual shift boot on my el and have done for 18months without out incident. I shorten the shaft so that with the manual knob the lock is always disengaged. Initially i had big zip ties either side of nuetral on the locking mechinism which with the little bit of side to side play in the shifter I was able to move it to other gears by moving the shifter hard top one side. now I just have a couple of large tack welds there but still requires me to move the shifter to one side to get it past nuetral. Unless someone is being a complete a hole and manually shifting the car really hard it hasnt have one problem (well in my case anyways) and thats with other people driving the car (friends, family and some work shops)

Dremmel or Grind a couple of slots up the thread on the shaft that the normal auto selector sits on and if your knob uses grub screws you can then make the whole knob slide up and down the shaft. So to speak. No, really, it worked for me - It sounds Mickey Mouse, but if you do it properly then there's no problem. I got sick of it and simply removed the whole mechanism to stop you going into reverse... I tried to put it in reverse on purpose a few times and discovered you have to go through Neutral first anyway. If you don't notice you've hit the big capital "N" and carry onto "R" for race then you've had one too many and could probably do with a clip about the lug holes. When I purposely put it into reverse whilst driving forwards I would have expected things to break. Nope. Stuck it in reverse and got sweet stuff all to show for it, so changed to "D" for d***head and carried on driving. Gearbox had done 340,000 and is still going strong in another car to this day. To cut a long story short --- Pull you auto knob off, don't be afraid to hacksaw and break the pin that sticks out the centre of the shifter so that it hits the new manual knob in a good position (as this pin is the bit that pushes the latch down further in the mechanism...) Or, do as I, and remove the stupid safety mechanism all together. I promise you'll get sick of it and decide that I wasn't so stupid after all. And that way, at least you'll still have all the original parts to put back on if you ever feel in the need. Whilst you're at it - Get a manual gear boot. And then you'll probably start looking for a clutch pedal too....... It's addictive. You want stop until you have a spiggot and throwout bearing attached to a flywheel and a short shifter vibrating worse than Madonna's power tool cupboard. |

intresting might have to look in to this...one of my cars the buttons f**k anyway and i havent had any probs with other things breaking...its actually better like that

JUNE 2008. interior_3.jpg [ 78.64 KiB | Viewed 334 times ] Note I have chopped a big off the threaded piece of the original auto selector and a decent amount off the "deselection rod" in the middle. The grub screws (with flattened off ends) would slide up and down these grooves and by putting a bit of tight fitting heat shrink around the top it didn't wobble much at all, but would require a refit at some stage as I've no doubt you'd wear through it. |
