Hi folks..
quick one.. I wish to put a switch in somewhere so I can turn off the interior lights when the door is open.. Often I have the door open while I'm working on something and 40 minutes later, the battery is flat.. I have replaced my interior light with a roof screen DVD and it has two big globes in it and no switch. (the factory one didn't have a switch either) between the roof globes, the center console rear globe and the globes under the dash on both sides.. my poor battery takes a beating.. and there doesn't appear to be a switch that turns them off. Has anyone added one? If I can find the central positive feed that powers all the lights, it would be trivial to put a switch in it, but someone who already knows the color and location could save me allot of time. anyone? rgds Frank |

What are you working on? electrics? If it's stuff that isn't electric you could always just simply disconnect the negative lead on the battery.

Yeah, I could do that.. but I have a full DVD and 5.1 surround system with time delay and all manner of other stuff.. to disconnect the battery means I must reset about 60 different settings not to mention the clock and stuff in the car itself...
rather just be able to turn the lights off. |

Try pulling the CRT LP fuse when you start work.

You will be looking around the BEM - you should be able to cut the courtesy lamp wire there.
Also - make sure the two rear lights are off (more current use), and have you thought of using LED's to replace the power hungry lights???? Nigel |

Hi Nigel,
I've already replaced the center console rear light with an LED, and both the under dash lights as well. will eventually do the boot and most other lights.. but for many reasons, I'd still like to be able to shut them down.. The falcons are the only car I've ever found where you couldn't turn them off. |

Id look at the BEM - it controls the interior light. I think a simple switch there might do the trick.
The info would be in here somewhere... http://www.fordmods.com/forums/Upgradin ... k-d47.html |

actually, my car is an EA fairmont Ghia.. so I doubt that BEM has much in common with mine.

Hmmm.. fairmont Ghia? - is a maybe.
Sorry - I dont have wiring diagrams here for one (ok, I do, but they are hard copy only). Will take a look and see if I get a chance. |

for a quick fix until you work out your switch just stick a bit of tape over the button that pops out when you open the door, that will keep the lights off while you do your work.

You'll most likely have a central controller (green colour ??) sitting in the dash to the left of the handbrake. Find the two black wires with blue trace - unplug the plug and test each line to earth, when you open/close a door, to find the one you want.

The wiring diagrams look at bit sketchy - looks like if you put a switch in there all it would do is defeat the lights fading out. It all depends where the wires join up.
A better bet looks like the loom going up the RHS pillar near the rear parcel shelf, this looks like the origin for the overhead lights. You should be able check this out in the boot, and maybe put a switch on the parcel shelf.

yeah, but would that do the footwell lights and stuff?
I figured that if there was a single point (the headlight switch) to turn them all on together.. then there should likewise be a way to turn them all off together. |
