Hi Guys.
Created this post about 1 hour ago and for some reason without warning it has disappeared, so sorry for people reading twice. My Ford Fairmont 94 model is having ignition barrel problems and I'm looking for some advice on changing it? Currently, I'm struggling to turn the car on. To get the car to started and once its been completely rotated clockwise ready to turn on, I jiggle the key in the ignition until I get a response from the car and in turn I hold the key and the car starts after I find the right spot. I also find once the car has started, some electrics do not work, like car windows, radio and wipers. To get these to work, I rotate the key anti clockwise until I hear a click behind the dash, the car remains running and the electrics then work. Has anyone had any issues of a similar nature? And do you recommend changing the barrel ? Thanks Daniel |

Sounds like the ignition switch itself is stuffed, I'd be replacing it, they're only held in by 1 screw from memory, but someone will correct me if I'm wrong.

Thanks mate
Are you able to guide me to where it is located ? And is it something I can grab from the wreckers ? Cheers Daniel |

I replied to this before mmm. Yes you can get another switch but you will have to buy the whole thing from a wreckers and it is on the steering column. You will need to go and buy two shear bolts from a Ford Dealer.

Yeah my posts kept being deleted, I did get a reply but I was not able to read it so thanks Papa Smurf. I have also noticed that if I tap the section above my left knee it seems to start alot easier, but I still have the issue of no power windows, radio and whippers still dont work unless I turn the key to the left
Also, sorry but what are the bolts used for with the assembly ? And will the wreckers have them ? |

The bolts are used to hold the assembly onto the steering column and you HAVE to buy NEW ones as once you have tightened them up, the top shears off. You will need to chisel the old ones off.

Don't have to buy sheer bolts. I have changed mine with a flat blade screwdriver and a hammer to undo and do then up before. A punch is tool of choice.

A punch is tool of choice. +1 iv done mine 3 times ( first 2 were dodgy ) and im still using the same bolts from the original one. once i got them out with a punch the first time i got a angle grinder and cut a slit in each bolt to make them easier to tighten up |

oh and you will need to leave the key on the run possition for about 30min ( until the door locks cycle ) then start your car....this has to be done so the dumb lock can learn the new switch and key otherwise the car will not crank or start

Thanks guys. Got the new barrel today for $40 from the wreckers. When replacing it should I disconnect the battery ? And I shouldn't have to go anywhere near the airbag should I ?

when i did mine i left the battery connected. all you have to do is take the cover off the steering column ( from memory is 4 bolts )..disconnect the broken switch ( 4 or 5 connections ) use a hammer and punch to remove the shear bolts and installation is the revers of removal..put the key on the run possition and leave it for 30min untill door locks cycle and start
