I have a 1996 EL Gli with factory Gas fitted and cruise control, I read somewhere that this meant that the power window wiring looms were already under the carpet and I was wondering what other things would be needed to install the electric windows in my car as I can head down to pinch a part and get all the items I need quite easily!

I believe that situation with the wiring looms was true for boxcars, but isn't true for EF/L.

You will need:

4x Window Regs
Door Trims (Won't match seats)
Centre Switch and rear switches
4X Door Looms
Floor/body loom.

Plus some fasteners and other bits. Look in the Technical Documents section, under resources on the top grey menu of the forum header.

Note that the window regs are riveted onto the door frame, so a decent drill and some good bits, along with a centre punch set will be needed to remove them. It will be easier to buy some regs off ebay or a forum member than remove them yourself at the wreckers.

I would also reccomend swapping the Gli low series BEM for a Futura/XR Mid Series BEM. Is a straight swap, but will add a few features to the wiper and interior light controls. Most importantly it will allow you to wire up a delay enabling the power windows to work for a short period after the car is turned off. Make sure you read up as much as you can, and have everything you need before you start. Allow a good day to give it a go.

You *could* have the front window wiring in there but not the rears. I had an EL wagon that was wired for ABS and cruise and had the front wiring already there in the body loom. You will need the door looms to finish it off. A simple-ish way to find out would be to remove the centre console and look for a slpit in the carpet under the cup holder. In there somewhere will be the window plug....

i don't know abt the EL, but some EF's didn't come with the window relay, u can check the fuse box and see if it has both contacts on the electric window fuse. if not u may need a dash loom as well.

Just a quick one to add, you wont need to drill out the rivets holding the manual regs in, get a center punch into the middle and give them a good whack with a hammer and they should pop out. Will save you a lot of time and hassle!

Sorry my bad, youll want to knock out the pin from the center of the rivets with the centre punch, that should make them easier to drill out

Wait sorry, my mistake. Now this is what i did:
Punch out the middle part of the rivet FIRST. Then i got hold of an averagely sharp chisel insert it between the door chassis and the rivet and gave it a whack with a hammer and surprisingly enough that's all it took! You can do it sooooo much faster then drilling.

PS. I got tired of freaken drilling and was kinda ruining the drill bit. So i thought of doing it this way..... And yeah i did also use a punch to punch out the middle first.
