I have an '89 EA, the pinnacle of reliability haha, with a high series cluster (after-market) and the temp and volt=meter gauges seem to just do their own thing. when i indicate the tick back and forth, sometimes when i start to car up they slowly go right to the top and then make their way back down to where they should be (i think) and then other times they just jump around coz they feel like it i guess...
Is this a common problem ? ive heard EA's are renowned for electrical problems so does this sound like the wires are picking up interference or could the sensors themselves need replacing, or maybe the car needs re-wiring or new looms ? |

don't bother with new looms or rewiring. Very expensive and harder to do on newer cars. Your problem is most likely the connections.
Take the earth strap off the block and clean it with emery paper, do the same with battery connections. Also take the panel that’s closest to the windscreen off, you will see an earth point in the middle at the base of the windscreen, un bolt it and clean it with emery paper again on both the eye terminal and where it touches with the firewall
