I can't see how the one wire links are bi-directional. Not impossible, but the output from the cluster (pin 14) is NOT a tri-state output, or at least does not go tri-state between data words. I checked this by biasing the pin to half supply voltage and watching the CRO output.

As I said, I'm pretty sure the VSS is routed directly to the ECU.

Cheers,
Dang

Hmm, okay. So what do we think the serial link between the ECU and Dash carries? What info does the dash display, which it doesnt get directly from the source?

OK, 3 things we know the dash knows that we know it doesn't get directly from sensors:

Coolant temperature (this sensor is wired to the ECU)
Gear lever position (also wired to ECU)
Fuel Flow - this must come from the ECU, as there would be too much noise to get this from the fuel guage sender.
So at least these 3 things must be carried on the DOL.

According to the manual, it also carries some A/C info for the climate control.

I'm guessing that the DOL also reports all the info from the ECU sensor inputs, such as throttle position, HEGO data, possibly RPM and speed, the knock sensor, power steering pressure switch etc.

I suspect that the line to the trip computer carries some info from the body computer, such as ABS and cruise.

I presume the ECU doesn't care about the fuel level or the oil pressure, which is why these are wired direct to the dash.

Cheers,
Dang.

You guys should look at this: {DESCRIPTION} those microprocessor boards have a RS232 port in addition to I/O's (perfect for setting up a user interface system). It wouldn't be too bad when combined with a multi-lined LCD backlit display. Maybe someone could gut a trip computer and use it and its buttons for the user interface?

Count me in, I'd be happy to lend my l33t programming skillz to this project.

Plus I have full version tools at home (I'm a real geek) so making osftware to distribute is not a problem (ie. with licensing).

now as for that circuit diagram...

Gear lever position is a piece of cake, laready done that one, so is what gear the gearbox is actually in, just reading a few voltages :D

Gear selection would be cool, you could rig up a small indicator in the dash like the fairlane's have letting you know what gear your auto is in....

Will cost about $60 and will be available shortly as soon as I get the BA shifter project complete, it is a part of the project.

** BUMP **

After Fast1's post and data_mine's gratuitous reference to this thread, I thought I would post an update to this project, however mundane.

I now have two wires hanging loose under the stereo after pulling the dash apart to put the variable wiper wiring and the low coolant sensor wiring in. One wire comes from the ECU data line, and the other comes from the trip computer data line.

By the time I'd finished putting it all back together, the dinner bell had rung, and there was no time for more play! Unfortunately, I'll be away for work for next fortnight, and anything more will have to wait....

So Waggin, care to fill me in on your project? We may avoid some duplication of effort...

Awesome stuff guys...

Ive been wanting to do the LCD thing for a while now. The DOL output souds very useful.

Im gonna do it in spare time but ill use an AVR micro, and include things like an interior light delay and automatic headlights off when you open the drivers door. The AVRs are kool cause you can reprogram them over and over, i think the PICs are one time programmable??

The LCD im looking at using is a 240 x 128 pixel graphics LCD from here http://www.futurlec.com/LCDDisp.shtml

But like i said itll happen slowly im sure...

Any one know if EDs have similar info in the DOL output?

In regards to Labview, you should be able to create an executable. All you need then is the labview runtime engine which is free and you should be able to run the program where ever you want.

Sounds great guys, im getting a little lost, i didnt read right in depth to it. But if we could make use of this on a PDA, that would be sweet as. Set up a little rig having it displaying all the info.....ill be in suspense. Well worthwhile project! keep it up

Yeah, that's wha tI'd be pushing for, as I already use my iPAQ for GPS navigation.

Yep, you could have it sitting in it's cradle on the top of the dash. Use the cradle to charge and transmitt data. :)
