I've been reading up on this but just want to make sure. When I fitted my fairmont cluster into my GLi which had a mid series BEM i added the resistor in to ensure the dimming and backlighting worked ok.
Now I have a high series BEM with this same cluster I am thinking I need to remove the resistor ?? Everything seems to work ok, except the trip computer is a little duller with the lights on that the cluster lcd or the climate control lcd. Will removing this resistor brighten the trip computer lcd up to the same level as the other two?? Thanks.

I think you do need to remove it Greg.
IIRC the doco says this too.

"Finally, it is also worth noting that if fitting a GLi/Futura/XR clusters to a Fairmont/Fairmont Ghia/EL-GT, THIS RESISTOR WILL NEED TO BE REMOVED, and IN ORDER FOR THE Variable Dimming Function to work correctly with the LCD Panels."

yeah yeah the strange thing is that out of the three lcd panels (cluster, climate control and trip computer) two of the work fine, just the TC isn't quite right. oh well... out it comes then - I'll just snip it off...

The best solution I'd say . . . .
Meanwhile, I'll do what your signature says . . . .

Ive noticed that there seems to be problems witht the Dimming Line for the LCD panels on Gli/Futura/XR models.....
I think that white line on those wiring looms must be going soemwhere other than the clusters dimmer line..... A couple of questions for ya..... 1) Are you running high series looms, or Low/Mid series ? 2) Ummmm... I think thats it for the moment... Lol You might want to check the resistance of Pin 5 (White for Low/Mid Looms - White/Black trace for High series looms).... With full brightness, you should be getting approx 0 Ohms resistance to ground..... If so, then try a different globe.... From memory there are 3 different wattages for those wedge bulbs... The Blue Base ones are 0.2Watt (The bulb is non removable).... The black is meant to be 0.5Watt and the Whites are meant to be 1Watt or soemthing..... If a different bulb has been put in, then it may make the trippy look dim ???? Thats pretty much all I can think of right now.... But I think the answer lies probably in the resistance of the LCD Dimmer line.... Check that and let us know how it goes !

I'm running high series loom for the body, dash and engine. It has a blue globe in it .. I checked the globe in the cluster lcd - it is also blue, if I only need to up if to a black or white one then I'll be happy with that.
Pin 5 resistance - are you referring to on the T/C or the cluster plug ?

Either or all....
It would be better to get it from the TC plug actually, just incase there is a problem with the line...... How dull is Dull ? I mean is it readable during the day time ?

would a higher series bem fix the dimming problem, as in the resistor wouldn't be needed?

During the day it is fine, same brightness as the other two lcd's. Just when you turn the lights on it dims and then dims again duller than the other two lcd's. Just a thought .. If I put a brighter globe in it will be too bright during the day...
