Ive noticed on EBAY there selling Leather MOMO steering wheels to suite EF-AU falcons but without the airbag part, how hard is it to install your original airbag into the new wheel?? Noticed them on ebay for $160 the other day.. cheap??

umm the best idea is to take you car to ford to get the wheels changes no way would i play with the airbag
i think in fordmods MK1 some member had it done and was about $40 and warrented by ford.

It was a piece of cake - just did mine on an EFII Fairmont - two bolts at the sides - Torx 50 bit to take the centre nut off - if you do it leave the bolt threaded in a couple of turns so when you pull the old wheel off, you dont end up with a face full of steering wheel and a couple of bruises. The cruise control harness just unscrews off, and is pretty simple to put back in - to disconnect the airbag was just a plug behind the airbag - best thing to do though is to disconnect the car battery for a bit before you attempt disconnecting the airbag - did it on mine now I have a nice charcoal coloured leather steering wheel from an AU Fairlane - looks great with the EF-EL Grey interior too!

as far as i know, the air bag can go off without battery voltage
i've taken the air bag off my car about 20 times, just unbolt and unplug!

You need to wait a couple of minutes after disconnecting the battery for the airbag "reserve" power to run out according to the manual, then it is considered safe. None-the-less, I think it is always good practise to face the air bag away from your face once you have it out.

Ford doesnt need to do it!
I am more into paying people to do s**t properly than 90% of people on this site yet i removed mine at least 10 times while swapping around n junk - as long as you dont break anything they arent dangerous, your not going IN the air bag, just around it, and its unplugged by then anywho. If you are too worried to change the wheel yaslef your over paranoid imho, unless you have a REALLY bad record with having odd behaviour and bad luck with simple s**t lol!

I got Ford to swap my wheel over and after getting quoted anywhere between $80 and $200 I finally got it done for $70.
It was a bit rich imho as I doubt there was more than 20 minutes work involved but as I wasn't sure about the airbag I thought I might as well cough up the dough. Good luck finding someone at Ford to help you - they all seemed less than interested in doing this simple job, especially if you supply the wheel. |

take most peoples advice, including mine and do it yourself. Save some $$$. Disconnect your battery, wait 5 mins and the air bag is disabled it WILL NOT GO OFF!
If this works then you can send me the $70 so I can buy beer if it will make you feel better!!

Its quite simple really, Disconnect the battery first, then turn on your headlights to discharge any residual current. Then follow Mutley's instructions.
The air bag is safe when the battery is disconnected. I have A XR6 Leather wheel in my EL Fairmont, looks great with the grey airbag centre.
