i was wondering how to do it to the normal heater / air con control unit (not climate control). when i tried removing it i pulled one of the hoses out. it sounded like an air compressor firing air out so in fright i quickly plugged it back in. is it ok to pull it out? and let the air out or is this air con gas or something :S

As mentioned it's just residual vacuum. You'll need to remove the heater control assy, and there is 4 bulbs soldered to the circuit board, which are replaced by 4 x LED's and resistors.
If you're not confident with soldering - and this one is a bit fiddly, don't attempt as you could f*ck the board assy, making matters worse.
