I've picked up a cheap EL dash so I can steal the needles cos the EA-ED ones are not nice..

With the rear strip LED's behind, it should all glow blue very nicely..

had the carbon fiber cluster printouts laminated for the princely sum of 2.50 and it came out great.

Before I laminated them though, I printed out second copies, and used a stanly knife to cut out around the writing of the guages and stuck the two together so the backlighting works as it did before...

nearly finished now and it looks brilliant..

Hey Mr Biggav...

It isn't finished yet, but here is it all sitting in place..

Image

The black wires sticking out the bottom are from the new rows of LED's inside.. The EA-ED dashes lit up mostly from the front unlike the EF/EL which was mostly from the rear.. as a result I had to take lighting matters into my own hands to get sufficient blue back lighting inside..

You can see the EL guage needles look good with it too.. much better than the lamo orange ED ones.. and they'll glow too when I'm done.

actually, looking at that image, I just realised I should make the yellow outline around the digital displays blue instead of yellow.. that would help dramatically..

Oh, and for anyone else that wants to put EL needles in an EA-ED dash.... The speedo and Tacho will fit straight out.. but the fuel and temp guage needles on the el have bigger sleeves and so are loose on the EA dash... I am getting around that by putting the EA needle sleeves in the EL sleeves for those guages.

I just made the yellow outlines around the digital displays dark blue now and it looks mint.

I'm trying not to rush it..

To get the EL clear needles to glow really blue, I'm putting some cheap LED fiber optic thing in that will direct the blue light directly to the base of the needles..

should look pretty cool when it's done.

I don't have photoshop either.. you don't need it..

download Gimpshop.. which is basically the free gimp modded to look and work like photoshop.

Thanks guys, I am still working out how I'm going to work it, but I will not give up the digital to go EL..... I'm already working on either grafting the digital center of the Fairmont dash into an EL or of making the fairmont cluster fit into the EL dash.. (I have two of both clusters to play with, one of each is currently stripped on my desk.)

My current plan involves removing the door open display from the cluster and replacing it with aftermarket oil pressure and vacuum/boost guages.. then change the facia again so the whole thing is integrated and looks factory. bought both the guages already and have stripped the boost gauge right down to the basic mech and tossed the rest..will do the same for the oil pressure and then start making a mounting bracket.

I'll probably give the ones I made away as they won't fit anymore, but I can also make the finished templates available for download so you can just print and laminate them yourself.

Just thought I would add a couple of raw scans that I noticed no-one else had done yet...and may well be useful to EF-EL owners whether you have the Police cluster or not...

Image
EF Police Cluster Speedo/Tacho etc.

Image
EF Police Cluster Guage Fascia.

Hopefully someone can make some use of these Raw Scans.

They need to be a lot bigger than that to be useful to anyone I'm afraid mate.. I want to use the police speedo section on my fairlane dash... so a big, hi res version would be awesome.
