hey all

just talking with a mate, and i've kinda roped myself into helping her wire up some footwell neons into her VS :?

so, the details are:

-4x neons - 2 front, 2 rear
-running off a separate switch
-not to be turned on when doors open or anything, only when switched on

so... i've only installed neons into footwells running off existing wiring - not having to run a new set.

so, looking for a complete guide please on how to install neons from scratch! give me simple explinations please - i'm not exactly a qualified electrician!

cheers :P

Run a wire from +12v to your switch. A SPST will do.
Run that wire to the positive wire of each neon, and then simply ground the negative wire of each neon (on the body somewhere).

Commodores have a big a** grommet that you can see on the drivers side of the engine bay if you want to get your 12v straight from the battery.

Make sure you get the ones that run a 12v 'natural' source... some of them have little adapters hidden in the cig lighter plug.... if you get the ones from jaycar they are good to go... cut the cig lighter adapter off and away you go.

Run them in parrallel or else you'll have some dim-a** neons.

If you want pwr with accessories (i'd recommend this) pinch the power from behind the cigarette lighter maybe? Or else, as suggested go straight to the battery... fuse the circuit either way IMO

I'd wire em something like this:

where 1 = neon 1, 2 = neon 2 etc. etc.

Cig +++++[fuse]+++++++1++++++2+++3+++4
Gnd---------[switch]----------1-----------2------3------4

SPST? lol treat me like i know nothing when it comes to this stuff, cause i don't! if i'm told exactly what i have to do, i'll get it done

so the switch only needs the one + wire running to it? is there any other way to ground the neons besides on an individual basis? run the negative wires back to the switch& ground them from there?

Yeah you can run them all back to the one wire, and then to either a ground wire, the body or the negative battery terminal.

If you use speaker wire for example, make a break somewhere in ONE of the wires for the switch, and another for the fuse - then you can run the speaker wire to each neon.

the neons under my footwells draw 250mA, so if you got 4, then when there all on, you'll draw 1A (thats if they draw the same ammount, which i think they will) ... grab a 1A or 1.5A fuse.
most of the wiring through out the car will handle the amp no probs, so take it from anywhere thats got power, connect the switch and bobs ya uncle.

have fun 8-)

SPST = Single Pole Single Throw
DPDT = Double Pole Double Throw
DP3T = Double Pole 3 Throw and so on

Yeah mate. Cig lighter probably sharing a 10A fuse with a few other gizmos so there's plenty of headroom in that circuit.

I reckon Ryan is spot on, a 1A or 1.5A fuse should do the trick nicely (remember to put the fuse somehwere accessible). Maybe have a look at the current draw specs on the neon packaging, dont want too low fuse or you'll blow it but dont want too high either...

Wire it up sp that it shorts out the computer. Get another commodore off the road. LOL. im guessing they are for her pleasure, not to showcase to the whole world, thats why she doesn't want them to come on everytime she opens the door

she wanted them to come on when she turned her headlights on - i've managed to talk her into banking them off a switch, so she has the option to turn them off if need be...

haha dylan - real pimp eh
