hey all

heres the issue: car has an NF/NL cluster, with the great 'P R N D 3 2 1' that iluminates depending on what is selected (for those who don't know, it lights up on the dash between the dials). now with a 5speed to be fitted soonish, this feature will become redundant.

or will it?

is there any way i can trick the cluster to select as per the gears, with a new 'N 1 2 3 4 5 R' set of dials? or am i best just to blank that part of the cluster out?

cheers! :)

Well Frase, you can achieve part of this - get it to indicate D in gear, N in neutral, R for reverse (reverse not totally sure). To indicate individual gear positions is considerably harder.
For the above to work, you need 3 resistors, and retain the auto ECU (resistor tricked of course).
This is off the top of my head, would have to sit down and do the circuit theory

if the information to light the LED's up is from the CAN bus forget it (short of haking the cluster) if it just takes the info from the auto gear position selector you could conceivably do it, add in some momentary switches (strong ones) to the shifter gate (so when you change gears the current gears switch is pressed), then wire them into the clusters inputs for gear, add a custom fascia for that part and it should work

uglybob:

ray - i'll be using a manual EF XR6 ECU as i'm not too keen on tricking the ECU seeing as how i have a manual one around! :P

bugger - seems its more effort than it'll be worth... :(

Yeah, that's a shame, there's not a lot of things to tap into off the T5, only the neutral & reverse switches. Running micros/limit switches would be pretty complicated, plus the reliability would be suspect.
At least with the auto ECU, the point of origin for the position info is from the combo switch on the auto box, so wherever the dash gets it's info is irrelevant - if you simulate this info from the point of origin, the rest falls in place.

The new Volkswagons show which gear you are in when using the sequential shift. Thats an auto though, should defintely be possible. I wanna do that in my coupe :).
