hi guys,

ive just placed a bid on an NL cluster on eBay, and i know it needs a fair bit of wiring etc to get working fully correctly, but my question is, can it be plugged straight in and the basic functions work?

No as the LHS plug is smaller so it needs to be cut down or replaced to fit, all existing functions then work but you will be left with flapping door, boot and fuel flap alerts but you will gain the auto mimic panel.

Sorry to kind of hijack the thread (but this would apply to alfy as well). has anyone got the auto mimic panel to work with the manual transmission (by changing the letters and what not).

i'd say you wouldnt be able to. the cluster knows what gear the auto is in via the data link between it and the ECU. the ecu always knows what gear the auto box is in. it doesnt know what gear a manual is in, so probly not

If you have tricked the ECU to think it is in Neutral, it will light up the 'N' on the dash. I have covered up the complete panel with some black 100mile an hour tape.

If you've got a manual I would highly recommend doing what BenJ has done.

Question BenJ, is your ECU Manual or Auto, because for some EL Fairmont/Ghia owners, you could maybe trick the ECU to not only figure out if it's in Neutral or not, but also possibly retain that Power Assist Steering thing that the EL High Series seem to have?

mine hasnt had the trick done to it, ie. the thermos run constantly, (i just take the fuse out to turn them off) i still have my S/S pwr steering with the thermos on, but i lose it with the thermos off, lol.

I have an EL Fairmont Ghia ECU. The Speed Sensitive steering still works in my mates EL Ghia with T5 conversion, so if I want to add that function to the EB it would only require an EL K Frame and the correct steering rack.

I wasn't actually asking how to get the EL Ghia Power Steering Assist into EA-ED :P.

What I was kinda asking/stating was, for EL Ghia owner's, when converting the Auto's to Manuals, keep the Auto ECU and do that resister trick thingy so that the engine works properly (I haven't fully read that bit in the tech files), Keep the Power Steering Assist thing, but also do another resister trick or smiler for when using an NL Cluster so that the ECU knows if it's in Neutral or not? and maybe even doing a mod so that the gear selector lights on the cluster show what gear your in (at least for gears 1, 2, and 3), but that's me getting my hopes up, I have no Idea of how the EL Auto ECU's function, just throwing the idea out there for someone to play around with, seeing as I have never owned an EF/EL YET.

If you have a manual in there is no way for the cluster to know what gear you are in.

So your options are, have the 'N' lit up all the time, or blank out the letters.

Now you have me wondering too SpeedyED. (sorry for thread hijack)

I have Ghia auto ECU, engine loom and power steering rack so will have low speed assist.

Are you saying that it won't work anymore if I swap to a manual and do the resister trick with the auto loom? If so, would there be a way to tell the ECU that the gearbox is in gear if the manual was in first and reverse? (reverse would probably be easy with a relay and the reverse light feed) but what about first?

Assuming that I can trick the ECU to see first and reverse as needed... what effect would that have to idle or low speed operation with the ECU.
