Working at ford, i find the easiest way is to listen to the HIM module. If you hear it turning, the him is ok. If you dont hear it then the him is dead and shaft is stuffed, either way dash out job, but pretty easy to do, about 15 mins to get it out if you know where the bolts are

Nah i havent got a step by step guide, its all in my head. I can do the entire job in under an hour now with air tools to make removing easier (never use them going back together though). |

Hello
I will give you a guide to BA XR dash removal DISCONNECT THE BATTERY!!!!! CONSOLE Pull out the drivers seat, T50 torx bit Remove the hand brake lever from the console, will be three 10mm bolts Remove the two 8mm bolts on the rear sides of the console Remove the T bar handle, one screw Lift off the silver surround around the shifter and remove the two screws and the four 8mm bolts Remove the two screws that hold the covers that sweep up the sides of the console toward the audio unit Remove the tissue tray, 2 screws Remove the 2 srews under the covers you just removed that face toward the front of the car, they hold the console in. Pull up hard from the rear and pull out the console assy DASH ASSY Pull off your DS(driver side) and PS (passenger side) scuff plates Pull off the door rubber and DS and PS Pull off the 'A' pillar trim on DS and PS Pull off the trim on either ends of the dash on the PS and DS, the plastic one that has your airbag sticker on it (if it has a sticker), and remove the two 10mm bolts behind. Inside your door jamb on the DS and PS there is a 10mm bolt that passes into the side of the dash assy, remove this, it will not come all the way out but as far as you can get it is ok... Lock the steering wheel and Remove the 10mm bolt in the shaft of the steering column inside the car, and push the shaft back a little toward the steering wheel till clear of the bracket on the floor.(Do not rotate the steering wheel when the shaft is removed or you will damage the clockspring inside the wheel and your air bag light will come on and stay on)Left of the shaft, there is a bracket from the dash to the firewall, remove the 10mm bolt. Remove the 10mm bolt that goes through a bracket to the floor of the car under the Audio unit Disconnect the wiring harness that connects to your restraint control Module next to the bolt you just removed Remove the bonnet release from the fuse panel and move aside Disconnect the brown plug on the front of the fuse panel and move aside Remove the DS and PS lower kick panel plastics and move aside Disconnect the wiring connectors on the DS and PS behind the panels (3 or 4 of them on each side from memory) Pull out the white mould they sit into and move aside, this will come out with your dash later on. Remove the cover plate right up to the center of the dash near the front screen, from memory, it is a 5mm allen key or hex key bolt, remove it. (its pretty hard to get to aswell) Pull the dash foward and make sure you dont get anything stuck or damage your kickpanel plastics !!!!Good luck!!! Note: If the HIM is faulty, a ford dealer will have to program it upon replacement or it will not work Any probs then email me ford_man_xr8@hotmail.com Matt |
