The speedo has a gear inside it that goes brittle and breaks. You need to go to a place that fixes speedos and get a new gear fitted in it or go to a wreckers and get a gear out of a known working speedo and replace it. Pulling the cluster apart to fix it is pretty easy but also fiddly. Its very common and usually happens when you give a hard press of the trip reset button.

Not sure where you can go in canberra but alot of wreckers can sometimes do it for you, some will try sell you a whole cluster and entice you to buy it because it has less kays. You will need to research in your area for a speedo repair shop or if you get desperate go to a self serve wrecking yard and practice on an old cluster there first .Ive replaced mine and the fiddliest thing is getting the unit apart and back together without scratching the faces or damaging the dials. you also need a torx screwdriver to open the cluster. might be a T8 but not 100%.

if u look in your yellow pages for a gauge/instument specialist (theres 2 in newy) you should be right. I pulled my cluster out and they charged me $50 to pull in apart and replace the gear with a brand newy.... your definitley not alone, it happends all the time

DIY in Street Fords magazine about this in issue 51 w/ photos, guide, etc. out 04/03
We did it for my ED. It is very easy to do. Gears for sale on ebay. Take the cluster out, remove back panel, remove speedo a***/assembly, see the squishy gear, remove and replace, fit in reverse order.
