Hi guys i was thinking of painting the facia in the center of the dash (the plastic surround with the air vents that surrounds the fan controls and cd player) on my s2 au falcon with a dark purple paint. I was also going to do the spear on the passanger side. Has anyone painted the facia bits on their au falcon (pref black interior)) so i cn get an idea of wether painted interior will look any good before i do it, cheers

I tried to do a black and blue interior in my AUII xr ute, but could never get the right blue to match the cluster background... So I gave up.
One thing I will say is that it's the EASIEST thing to make look HORRIBLE! Make sure you do the prep work right... Be patient with it! If I were to do it again, I would take it to a trusted paint place. Costs hardly anything, but at least you'll get a good finish on the pieces and I would re-install it myself...

Yeah im afraid of it looking bad, and its a fairly large area to paint. I wouldnt do the air vent like you did, just the surround on dash, speer and the bit around the gearstick. My mate has it done in his el, and it looks good just havnt seen it in a au

I'd say give it a go, but I would also say go buy spare bits first. Local wreckers to me let me just walk our with most of the stuff... s**t load of au's around.
If it looks crappy, just switch back... Also pick a dark colour (which I see you have), cause that blue I had was horrible. All I could see was bright blue reflections in all the windows... :/ But just be patient and you should be right... And also be prepared for it looking grubby over time. They are difficult to keep clean... Be careful which choice of cleaning products too... Not trying to deter you, but just be conscious of it...

Yeah i think ill just give it a go, can easily replace it with one from a wreckers if I stuff it up. Is there any special paint i should use? I was just going to sand it down, base coat of etch primer then sand it again then the colour? Or do i need a special plastic paint.

i didnt want a smooth glossy finish, i wanted to keep some of the texture from the original surface... so i just cleaned them really well with grease and wax remover (supercheap homebrand works wonders lol) then used VHT Vinyl dye... came up good and was easy ish to keep clean...
but i was originally told to use some sort of primer to make it last longer... though i struggled to find a primer that gave me the surface finish i was looking for.

i didn't use any special paint. I've started doing my XG dashboard and i just got cheap paint from bloody cheap as chips. Sanded it back, and on the paint, Turned out alright i thought...

Hey fordaute, the colour looks to match the cluster, but in the first pick u posted it looks bright blue. So does vinyl die work on plastic? Cos the bits i want to paint are shiny plastic. Same plastic as the light switch

they are two different blues, the first one was 3M i think and the second one was a VHT blue. The second (darker) one had too much 'grey' in it... it was very close but you could tell they werent the same blue... but meh, they are still in the car haha
in my experience i had the best results with the vinyl dyes, left a good finish and wasnt too bad to keep clean.. just had to remember to be careful with dash protectant stuff (eg armorall), its not too good for the paint. hmm i think the shiny plastics might need to be surface prep'd... i dont know sorry mate, bit out of my depth here...

Repco down near me has a clear plastic primer that I have used to redo my dash and trim I gave it 2 coats and let it dry overnight then I hit the vinyl with the dye and the hard plastic bits with a acrylic lacure will post pics up shortly |

memory I think I got the sepatone brand for about $9.00 a can, so far its sticks and looks great, I tried the plastic primer filler aswell, thats stuff is shocking. I was hoping to use it to fill the indentations on the fixed rear window of the lovely "E" series.
