gday guys
im wanting to change the colour of my dash to suit the colour of my kit. the guy who did this white worked at a panel shop as a sprayer so it has been done properly. unfortunally we arnt mates any more and wanna do it my self. ive got the colour i want mixed up in a can and i was just wondering what i would have to do to prep it or can i go straight over the top and finish it off with a clear? any tips? cheers guys dave

If you're painting over that dash section it looks pretty smooth already. You would just have to give it a light grade and wet and dry sand before spraying.
If you're doing it from scratch, you'll need to use some a*** grit paper to remove the textured grain from the plastic, then work your way up through the finer grades of paper to finish at wet and dry. That will ensure a nice smooth finish for the colour. You should use plastic or bumper primer (available in a pressure-pack), to get a better grip. I haven't sanded or painted in a while so I can't remember what grades of paper to use. Also I'm not sure if there would be any issues with some paint solvents on the plastic. Check at your auto-paint shop, library or the 'net. Good luck.

If the paint your using is not a proper plastic/vinyl paint which I assume it isn't, then you will need a plastic primer to go straight onto the plastic before spraying your paint over the top.
Honestly, the best and easiest way to do it is simply buy a few cans of plastic and vinyl paint. That stuff works a treat. But you are limited with your colour selection... Which section are you talking about anyway? the hard plastic part which is painted white or the soft vinyl?

you don't need plastic primer on hard plastics.
if it don't flex then plastic primer isnt needed.

if it don't flex then plastic primer isnt needed. But it does stop it from flaking if you scratch it. Plastic primer sticks to plastic well and paint sticks to plastic primer well which means the paint is harder to scratch or flake off.

yeah it is the white that im changing the colour of. i got the colour im after mixed into pressure pack at my auto paint store to spray a few other bits and pieces that are plastic and still have plastic primer left so it looks like ill be...
-lightly sanding with a light grade of wet and dry first -then applying a few coates of colour -then clear coating. shouldnt be too hard sound right?
