ohh yeh I also frosted the led's with a drill and a 180grit sponge so light was distributed around, not directional.

I had a look and the only way I can figure out how to do it is unsolder the lcd screen itself! Wrong, you can remove the filter very easily. No un-soldering required. you just need to remove the entire plastics around the pcb to get to the lcd. as for the Trip computer/CC they're relatively easy, same again, undo them and replace the filter. seriously? Cause I was at it for a while! How do you remove the plastics? is it fairly simple procedure Ill probably kick myself next time I pull it apart!

pull the old orange filter out from behind the lcd and i just cut a piece of paper the same shape and replaced it with that.
remove dash instruments from car, remove front clear cover remove needles from gauges (making sure to mark where they were pointing) remove screws to each gauge 'motor' remove clear lenses then when u have the dash out and apart there are 2 screws that hold the circuit board to the white housing backing,1 on each lower corner, remove them and seperate the circuit board from the housing and turn it over Attachment: then remove the 4 screws that hold the lcd panel and warning lights to the board Attachment: 4 clips hold that in the board, release them and take the warning light/lcd panel off Attachment: remove lcd panel and take the orange filter out and replace with white one Attachment: installation is - reverse above steps |

t5 wedge leds can be used, make sure u use the white globe holders as the blue holders have the globes soldered in.
also when i put mine in i frosted the leds with some 180grit sand paper and took 2-3mm off the led 'bulb' shaped tip (makes the led shine in a larger pattern instead of a spot) makes the finished display colour even instead of blotchy narva plug and play t5 coloured leds are the easiest to use, as sometimes the wedge style are too long to fit, i made my own, soldered led and resistor together and soldered them into old blue housings with the glass globe cut out of it |

yes... but if you get single led wedges, they will be unidirectional and not bright enough..
The T5's I have here have 3 ultrabrite LED's on the one wedge and they are equivalent to the old globe only blue. I first bought a box of single led T10 wedges for my EA ghia dash and I've ended up using them on the under dash lights and the rear console etc as they are just not bright enough for the cluster or climate control |

I found the 8 globe T10's in my EA on ebay from a link someone provided in this forum actually..
the T5's I found the same way... lots of searching on ebay. If I can find the post I'll stick it up... but there are tons selling them. Just did a quick ebay search for T10 LED and found this in the first page (a 6 led t10 globe) {DESCRIPTION} or this cheaper better option.... {DESCRIPTION} Takes lots of wading though results, but multi LED globes are available in T5 and T10 and are much much brighter than singles, also they spread the light out like a normal incandescent. rgds Frank |

Ok I'm finally going to get around to doing this mod next week. I know these are silly questions but any help is great!
I know that the single leds are no good...the multis are much better. Which type do I need ? The T5's or T10s? I think from memory I need six if i want to just change the gauges. I might get around to changing the odo one day so how many all up? Thanks

T5 for EF/EL Cluster, T10's are for the globes like the footwell, glove box and others. Not sure on the total amount for full cluster

Yup its the T5 wedge LED's your after.
If you just want the gauges/dials done theres 6 bulbs you need to replace. 3 for each side of the cluster. The bulb holders for those six bulbs are white ones so you'll be able to use those bulb holders by taking the old bulbs ones out and plugging the LEDs in. Some of them can be stuck in real good due to heat so you may need to wriggle them a bit to get them out. There is 1 bulb for the odometer. The 6 bulbs you'll need to replace to do just the gauges/dials are pointed out below.. Excuse my shocking paint skills Attachment: led bulbs.JPG [ 9.64 KiB | Viewed 7123 times ] |

Demister is blown
You will need 6 to do the cluster lighting, one for odo, one for demist, one for clock/two for trip... Last edited by krisisdog on Tue Feb 02, 2010 8:10 pm, edited 1 time in total. |
