I bought 10$ blue leds off ebay from china, but didnt realise blue doesnt illuminate through the red/orange needles. I questioned a guy off ebay who was selling white dash conversions for AU's if he would sell me white/ but he wanted 50$ for them, if i sent him the orange ones i had.... So yeah, if anyone can shed some light on a cheap fix it would be much appreciated. driving at night without being able to check ur speed easily is as annoying as f***. easiest fix is what i did, take needles off get a sharp blade or razor, simply take off the orange then either leave it clear like i did, or paint the back with white paint or white out etc. done!!!!

Just remember to scrape it carefully, don't go rambo style on it because the scratches will show up, just gently and lightly scape it off. One of the needles i did on mine had a big scratch in it which look crap but it was one of the smaller ones on the oil gasuge so it wasn't so bad. If it was the speedo I would have been p****d. |

I slapped some in my last EB S2 Fairmont (with the prism reflective bit, not backlit) and turned out brilliant!
Only prob i ran into is that the original needles were painted orange, and does not reflect green light, so i prized each needle off and sprayed them with some silver paint I had. b**ch of a job but I was happy (til i wrote the car off 3 days later!! ) heres the 2 pics in the lightest and darkest positions: This was all done with T10 triple LED's purchased from my local Autobarn. Also did the climate control, but couln't change the top globe as it's a long globe soldered to the board. Cheers, Spud. |

Kept the back lighting orange because it would be impractical for the day, and I like the look.

I've experimented with a few globes he's what I've found
Jaycar blue LEDs : They come with bulb holder aswell, they were not very bright at all, didn't spread light much across the dash face. Also they looked aqua blue. I like the darker blue better LEDs that insert into existing bulb holder: They were very bright out side the dash but didn't focus the light so once inside the dash they looked dull. Good for a trip computer screen where light needs to be spread. LEDs I brought off eBay and soldered into existing bulb holder: These are the best LEDs I've used, because they focus the light at once point, all the LEDs brightness is focused on the optic screen under the dash face which then carries the light to the needles and across the face of the dash. What I found was that LEDs that spread the light cant focus it on the optic reflector which then wont Carry much light to the needles. I have a el xr6 dash so the speedo, tacho, fuel , and temp were bright but the oil and volts were dull. So next time you purchase LEDs get bright ones but also make sure they focus the light to a point, so all the light is focused on the optic reflector. I have made some new LEDs just gotta test them. I had home made LEDs in My Ef and they were bright they lit up my whole dash. Ive been using 2 dashes ( the one which was in my Ef which was a fairmont dash with el faces, and the dash in my xr6 ) And both are the same with the same LEDs so it's not the dash it's the LEDs. Just thought I'd clear up that variable

also for my needles, i just used cotton tips and nail polish remover to rub the orange off my needles. i did the same with climate control and odometer orange filter then put them back in. worked great.
