Hey hey.
I recently got a hold of a set of the plastic woodgrain door and dash spears, and the surface could use a neaten up. Problem is, because they are the plastic ones, are they actually coated in a clear finish?? I was thinking of giving them a light sand with some 800grit, and then respray some clear over them. And there is the problem: - If they dont have a clear coat already on them, the clear spray will just eventually flake off won't it?? Anyone have expertise is such a field? Thanks, Andrew.

You need to be careful when sanding, because if you sand through the clear, the woodgrain finish isn't very thick, and you could be left with a straight brown finish you can't restore.
I would say try some cut and polish on the scratches - it may just gloss them up a bit, so they aren't too obvious.

i have touched up a couple of scratches in mine. i got a fine paint brush and touched them up with acrylic clear,(try not to get it outside the scratches) then gave them a light rub with 1500 w/d and hand polish n wax. you realy have to look hard to see them now.

Yes will still be moulding them, but it thought i'll repair mine first, so the mould comes out better. Hopefully will have some moulds made by the end of next week, if i'm not too lazy. (i'm on holidays at the mo)

I will be making the moulds myself, and the reproduction spears myself.
As for price, i'm not sure. I guess i'll make 5 sets first go, weigh up how much material i use, and then work out how much it costs me per set. making moulds is easy, plaster is my friend.

Yeah, touching up with clear is a good idea.
Definately don't paint them unless the clear is buggered and flaking off.
